#rhodesmustfall

Wed 9 April is the 10 year anniversary of the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue from UCT's campus.

Where did the time go? But also. What is the legacy of #RhodesMustFall? Whose narrative is seen as the more legitimate voice of RMF? It's contested.

Rhodes Trust criticised for 'uncomfortable' slavery talk - BBC News The prestigious scholarship programme is accused of celebrating its imperialist founder.

26 March 1902. Cecil Rhodes died (aged 48). In 2020, after the death of George Floyd, conversations around colonisers like Rhodes came to a head with the decapitation of his statue in South Africa and the #RhodesMustFall campaign in Oxford.

Why “erase” history?

The law requires trustees to act in 'best interests' of the charity. But law also defines maximisation of funds in charity as likely the same as its 'best interests'. That is something that Parliament should correct, as the issue is likely to persist. #RhodesMustFall

Donors link their name or image to perpetual organisations in pursuit of a *personal* perpetuity. But they drive weak bargains, giving proportionately little in return for the enormous privilege of 'forever'. And so there is no reason why past deals should hold. #RhodesMustFall

Rhodocycles | Nakul Krishna “You must promise me something before we start.” “Certainly,” I said. “You must promise me—that you will not spend the next eight weeks ranting at me about colonialism. Well, if you must, one week of ranting is fine. Maybe two. But after that I’m afraid you really will have to do some real work.”

Everyone following #RhodesMustFall should read Nakul Krishna's terrific @nplusonemag 2016 essay on it:

"Oxford — and the mainstream British political culture it feeds — is formidably well armored with defense mechanisms and comforting fables.
