Twitter wound up creating basically the same #RotEconomy that makes the Techbros tick. They only care about making the stock price go up, no matter what. It's striking just how similar that is to clout chasing on social media, because stock prices are driven more by perception than actual results.

The #RotEconomy has thoroughly devoured Micro$oft. I used to think that they would end up as a big, boring, but profitable company like IBM or SAP, but now it looks like they want to speedrun going down in flames powered by AI shite.

“The updated subscription pricing reflects the significant added AI value…”

We all know this is bullshit, but they’re so desperate for it to be true, that they sent this email multiple times, including a little after midnight on the day it takes effect.

Yet another reason for me to avoid streaming services... 🤮

Call me old-fashioned, but I like to own my music. That way it can't just disappear one day. The artist gets more money. And I don't have to listen to intrusive ads.

Bubble Trouble An AI bubble threatens Silicon Valley, and all of us.

The hype-economy (or #roteconomy) and its believers/promoters/leaders may be about to amplify the crash to come / already underway.
There isn't much there there, but they are zealots of potential (unfounded), spoiled by their privilege and the luck it affords them.

Did you hear about Cory Doctorow's posit on the #Enshitification of internet/tech? He talks of ways to combat it. Another term is The #RotEconomy from Ed Zitron

The key question is simple:

What to do now?

Personally, I don’t see much reason to respect anyone in Big Business or neoliberal politics.

I specifically say that people like David Zaslav or Bill Gates should be called fascists. Any CEO paying fealty to Trump is a fascist. Any CEO reducing the quality of life via the #RotEconomy is a fascist.

Remember when they kept saying AI was going to do the boring stuff so you had time for creative activities?

Funny how all the conpanies pursue are models that do the "fun" stuff and there is still no AI tool to do my ironing.

(also the AI and rot economy stuff)

But yeah the batman who laughs is garbage

Meanwhile my 2011 mac mini still runs perfectly. Slow, but none of the software that hasn’t been updated in 8 years is buggy. It’s either on purpose or the skill level of devs dropped hard. I bet it’s the former. #roteconomy

Everytime you open Facebook, there's some kind of tabloid style fake news page on top of the feed. You don't follow this page and it's not even an ad. So you block it and yet there's a new identical one everytime you reload. Facebook slop is even worse than imagined! #roteconomy @edzitron.com

Everyone now sees the rot economy—and we’re beginning to understand what’s behind it
Again, things I’ve been pointing out for over a decade—heck, even over two decades, if you consider early concerns I had over Yahoo!—are now mainstream thought.

Ed Zitron’s latest newsletter begins:

A great deal of what I write feels like narrating the end of the world—watching as the growth-at-all-costs, hyper-financialized Rot Economy seemingly tarnishes every corner of our digital lives. My core frustration isn’t just how shitty things have gotten, but how said shittiness has become so profitable for so many companies.

Ed talks about the terrible software and websites that we now live with:

product decisions are now driven, in many cases, by companies trying to make you do something rather than do something for you

and:

We live in a constant state of digital micro-aggressions, and as I wrote last year, it’s everywhere

And like me, Ed has to defend himself by saying he doesn’t hate tech, but he knows that it could be, and could have been, so much better.

Like me, he remembers the days of actual progress brought about by technology, not tech that attempts to milk users at every turn.

Head over to his newsletter, Where’s Your Ed at. I’m relieved that there are others who see what I’ve been seeing for a long, long time. I wonder if those who criticized me for it, gaslighting me by saying that no one else experienced what I so frequently observed, now accept the truth, or do they still love Big Brother? Or have they simply conveniently forgotten their subservience?

What’s the bigger picture here? Read ‘The plot against America’ by Mike Brock in Notes from the Circus. It might not be that hard to draw parallels between certain things happening in the US and 1930s Germany, but the forces have been at play for a long time, and those forces differ. Then tell me that a lot of the people dismantling democratic systems aren’t wedded to some form of this techno-determinism. Brock labels it epistemic authoritarianism. And when I say that technology is here to serve us, it runs completely counter to the beliefs of this movement.
<section class="wp-yuzo yzp-wrapper yzp-id-14320 yzp-template-grid-jet-pack I realize I'm shouting into the void here, but the enshittification continues unperturbed.

Disney+'s updated Terms & Conditions includes this.

Call me naive, but shouldn't they change the name of the plan to "mostly ad-free" or just "fuck you, consumer!"?
