Der Ausgang der Wahl entscheidet über den künftigen politischen Kurs Chiles. José Antonio Kast ist Anwalt und mehrfacher Präsidentschaftskandidat. Er hat familiäre deutsche Wurzeln. Sein Vater war Wehrmachtssoldat und nach Medienrecherchen Mitglied der NSDAP. Kast bewundert offen den chilenischen Diktator Augusto Pinochet, unter dessen Militärregime Tausende Menschen gefoltert, verschleppt und ermordet wurden. Politisch steht er für einen harten sicherheitspolitischen Kurs, für die Abschiebung irregulärer Migranten sowie für die militärische Sicherung der Grenze zu Bolivien. Gesellschaftspolitisch lehnt er Abtreibung, Scheidung und die Ehe für alle ab. Im Jahr 2019 gründete Kast die ultrarechte Republikanische Partei. Jeannette Jara stammt aus einem Arbeiterstadtteil in Santiago. Seit ihrer Jugend engagiert sie sich in der Kommunistischen Partei und gehört heute dem sozialdemokratischen Flügel an. Sie wirbt für ein breites Mitte-links-Bündnis. Als frühere Arbeits- und Sozialministerin setzte sie Reformen um, darunter die Verkürzung der Wochenarbeitszeit auf 40 Stunden sowie erste Reformschritte im überwiegend privaten Rentensystem. Ein zentrales Thema des Wahlkampfs ist die öffentliche Sicherheit. Kast verknüpft die Bekämpfung von Kriminalität eng mit Migration und setzt auf staatliche Repression. Jara will ebenfalls strengere Kontrollen gegen irreguläre Einwanderung, setzt dabei jedoch auf eine Kombination aus staatlicher Kontrolle und sozialpolitischen Maßnahmen. Dazu gehören etwa die Stärkung der Arbeitnehmerrechte und eine Anhebung des Mindestlohns. Der Wahlkampf zeigt zwei gegensätzliche Gesellschaftsbilder. Kast steht für eine autoritäre, religiös-konservative Ordnung mit starker Exekutive und eingeschränkten Bürgerrechten. Jara verkörpert eine soziale, reformorientierte Demokratie.
