A voir !

Last one for today is the quietly stunning ‘Sunset, Herblay, 1889’ by Paul Signac. I love the reflections in the water and the sunset. It’s such a simple composition, yet I stood looking at it for ages.

The woman with an umbrella is Berthe Roblès (1862-1942), a distant cousin of Camille Pissarro, whom Paul Signac had met in the early 1880s while attending the Chat Noir cabaret. She then shared the painter's life and became his wife on November 7, 1892, a few months before the creation of this canvas.

In this painting with Roblès in profile facing her left (our right), sheltering under an umbrella, Signac takes up a theme often painted by other Impressionists, in particular by Claude Monet in his two Essais de figure en plein air, preserved at the Musée d'Orsay. However, he gives a purely neo-impressionist interpretation of the subject.

The pointillism playfulness of simultaneous contrasting colors, particularly the green-red/orange and yellow-purple areas deliberately reduces the canvas to two dimensions, without any illusion of depth while limiting shadows on the face. If the stylization effect of the work is reinforced by the frankly hieratic aspect of the model, the arabesque-style of the sleeve lines, the umbrella, and details such as the stylized flower or the trimmings detail to accentuate the deliberately decorative vibe.

This is part of a portrait series devoted to the artist's relatives and which includes the famous effigy of the writer and art critic Félix Fénéon (1890), preserved at the MoMA in New York.
