It does kind of irk me that they made Chekov 17.
He's 4 years older than Prime Chekov, and they had to futz with things to get him on the ship, but, like, he could be 22, fresh from the Academy, and it'd still work.

My headcanon is the "no more than 10,000 have survived" to mean 10,000 of 7 billion evacuated. Not counting Starfleet officers, Vulcans civilians off-world, etc.
But, yeah, I can't imagine more than a few million - max - are left.

The way I see it, technological progression kind of halted in the 2230s - which is why most of Starfleet looks Kelvin-y - while Starfleet reverse-engineered the tech scanned from the Narada, and revamped the Connie to match...which is also why it's so big. It's 2387 tech using 2233 tech.
