We cannot return to a past where students with disabilities are marginalized or denied education. People with disabilities are us. It's me, it’s you, it’s our friends, and our family. Our rights—and our futures—depend on the Department of Education.

Why this matters: 15% of all American students—over 5.5 million children—are SWDs on IEPs. And 25% of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before the age of 67. Disability is a part of who we are as a society. It's natural.

What happens w/o federal protections? In a voucher or choice system, specialized education for SWDs is costly and unsustainable. Many private/choice schools won’t accept SWDs, leaving them, at best, “tolerated but not educated” in underfunded schools or at worst segregated.

History shows (see above) we don’t provide equitable education for SWDS without federal oversight.

Without IDEA, we risk undoing decades of progress.
30% of all education funding comes from the federal govt & almost all support for SWDs originates there. If these funds are left to state discretion, there’s no guarantee they’ll be used ethically or effectively.

In 34 years, IDEA has transformed education for students with disabilities, ensuring:
Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Tailored support to access the same education as their peers.
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE): Inclusion in general classrooms, not segregation.

It's only in the last 34 years that students with disabilities have had equitable access to education—and because our society isn’t inherently ethical or inclusive, this progress required federal legislation.

A VERY short timeline:
1907: Eugenic laws forced sterilization of people with disabilities.
1970s: Disability rights activists fought for basic rights, while “Ugly Laws” criminalized visible disabilities until 1974.
1990: ADA and IDEA provides access to education and equity.
