How about a #ScienceScape for #Scape day? Something a bit different.

This is from
@fermilab.bsky.social They hosted the 2025 Photowalk, which was amazing.

SciencEscape on Instagram: "Icy Volcanoes on Pluto’s surface! ❄🌋 Our beloved Pluto, the ninth (dwarf) planet away from the Sun makes the news once again! A recent study conducted on a set of images captured by New Horizons (NASA interplanetary space probe) revealed a lumpy region on Pluto that looks different from what has been observed before. This area, largely covered in ice, is characterized by several volcanic domes! Forget the image of Earth’s volcanoes erupting red-hot lava and projecting high columns of ash in the atmosphere. Pluto’s volcanoes are effectively moving a dense mixture of water and ice (more or less like toothpaste) from the planet’s interior to the surface. Researchers hypothesized that these “icy” volcanoes could remain dormant for some time and then activate again, much like the volcanoes on Earth. Many questions remain unanswered as Pluto was believed to lack any source of internal heat - which would be needed to trigger any sort of volcanism. Nevertheless, this discovery supports the hypothesis for the presence of a large subsurface ocean, raising intriguing questions (humor us here) about the potential presence of living organisms!!
