An infographic sharing information about the USPS postmark change effective December 24, 2025. It explains that mail dropped into a USPS collection box used to be postmarked the day it was collected (i.e., same day as drop-off as long as you were ahead of the posted collection time). However, as of December 24, 2025, mail dropped into USPS collection boxes will be postmarked on the day that items are PROCESSED, which will generally mean 1-2 days after drop-off.
If you need same-day postmark, you now need to go to the service counter in a post office and request a manual postmark. This is especially critical for items with a "mail by" deadline, such as tax returns and mail-in ballots.
If you need a same-day postmark from USPS, make sure you visit the counter and request a manual postmark!
