Request for public discussion and ballot to add rules on paratypes to the SeqCode and amend recommendations on name formation The “Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes Described from Sequence Data” (the SeqCode) was conceived and introduced to address the need to validly publish na

SeqCode recognizes strains and their value for experimental work. However, type material in #SeqCode consists of genome sequence that unambiguously defines a species. The request suggests using strains as paratypes of genomic type material.

The justification must be solid, and consulting the broader stakeholder community, those who actually work with the microbe, is essential as these changes directly impact their work 🧬🔬

@isme-microbes.bsky.social offers a great opportunity to publish uncultured microbes via #SeqCode using #genomes as type material. A fantastic step toward embracing the true diversity of microbes! But isolates are also welcome 🧫🔬🦠😁

🎉 The #SeqCode has reached a significant milestone: with the validation of the genus Skiveiella, a total of 1,000 #names have now been validly published under the SeqCode.

This achievement marks a major step forward in the adoption and impact of the SeqCode within the scientific community.

But, there is obviously a controversy brewing when it comes to authors publishing names under the ICNP that are in conflict with #SeqCode validated names. This is possible since the ICSP does not (yet) recognize SeqCode names. Hopefully that will change soon.

Not so fast 😊 , #Patescibacteriota is a validly published phylum name under the #SeqCode and is here to stay ;-)

Since 2022, the SeqCode Registry has enabled the valid publication of 700+ names, providing nomenclatural stability and recognition for prokaryotes described without pure cultures. We’re a small but growing community advancing the use of genomic data in naming microorganisms.

#seqcode, as we also propose names for two novel genera within the MB11C04 family, as well as suggest a non-alphanumeric name, Seribacteraceae. Check it out!
