She’d been running through the drills like the SHIELD handbook had crawled up her ass and set up shop—It’d serve her fine in a controlled environment but in the field? You’ve got one hell of a right hook—Little stiff but, hey, it’s cute that you’re trying.” Sharon didn’t pause, didn’t even look his way. “And I just beat your guy in sparring.” “Barely—You had to work for it.” Brock grinned, pushing off the wall and sauntering over, circling her like he was assessing, like he was amused. “You ever think, maybe, it shouldn’t be that hard?” She exhaled sharply, rolling her shoulders. “Some of us don’t take shortcuts.”
“Some of us don’t need to,” He grinned, looking her way just enough to watch her reaction. “Atta girl, lighten the fuck up.” He clapped a heavy hand on her shoulder, letting it linger for longer than what was probably necessary. “Look, I get it—You got the last name, that goddamn legacy hanging over your head. Lotta pressure—But you don’t have to run yourself into the ground to prove you belong here.” And that got her attention, she shot him a long glance. “I do belong here.” “Sure,” He shrugged, “But does everyone think that?” He cocked his head, letting the question hang. “You ever wonder why STRIKE doesn’t have many… women?” Sharon’s expression barely shifted, but Rumlow knew he’d hit something. Fucking bingo. Brock smirked, leaning in closer, lowering his voice just enough to make it feel personal. Like it was just between them. “It’s a goddamn boys’ club. Always has been. You wanna get in, you gotta prove you can keep up.” She didn’t answer right away, and that told Brock everything he needed to know. “Think about it, Agent.” He called, turning away. “Door’s open if you’re ready to start acting like you deserve to be here.”
