Another short phonescope video from yesterday.. the Great Grey Shrike. 😀 #BirdingHungary #shrikes
Standing like a sentinel over a cold, snowy, windswept plain, watching intently for any movement... the butcher bird... a Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor). No bugs in the grip of winter so its diet at this time of year is mice, voles and other small songbirds. #BirdingHungary #shrikes

Loggerhead Shrikes are birds without borders ranging from Canada to Mexico. These songbirds feed on insects, spiders, lizards, frogs, small rodents, bats, small birds, and are even known to eat venomous snakes!

Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor) is a winter bird in Hungary and the numbers seem to be way down the past two winters. Hopefully a rebound this year as I've already had quite a few sightings in the past 6 weeks. #BirdingHungary #shrikes
Another highlight today was this dapper Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor). This is the winter shrike in Hungary, arriving after the Lesser Grey Shrikes and Red-backed Shrikes have cleared out. #BirdingHungary #birds #shrikes

It is always great to see good numbers of 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 Long-tailed Shrike around. This #endemic subspecies used to roam the Central Plains of #Thailand. It has declined so severely that it is now classified as Critically #Endangered by National Red List authority

Yes! It's yet ANOTHER Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio). If I had a buck for every one of these I saw in the last month, I'd be rich! 💰😂 #BirdingHungary #birds #shrikes
Here's an uncommon sight. Nothing uncommon about Red-backed Shrikes.. they are EVERYWHERE right now. But this late in the summer, virtually all of them are juveniles. So we had a nice surprise yesterday with this adult male. 😀👍 #BirdingHungary #birds #shrikes
Unhand me you brute! This Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) wasn't too happy about getting ringed. 😀 #BirdingHungary #birds #shrikes #ringing #banding
Yet another juvenile Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio). In late summer, they seem to be everywhere. They don't really have a forked tail... its plumage just got mussed up in the bag while it was waiting to be ringed. But it looks cool! 😀👍 #BirdingHungary #shrikes #birds #birding #ringing
Juvenile Red-backed Shrikes (Lanius collurio) are one of the commonest #birds in the Hungarian countryside right now. The parent have split for Africa and the young ones haven't quite figured out the migration business yet. Some of them will hang around until late Sept. #BirdingHungary #shrikes
Juvenile Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio). Have to be careful handling this one. They can draw blood with that sharp hooked beak of theirs and they ain't afraid to use it! 😬 #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenIn2025 #birds #birding #shrikes

🌏 Bull-headed shrike (Lanius bucephalus) The bull-headed shrike is a medium-sized bird (19-20 cm) with a robust build. Males (pictured) have a rufous crown, black mask, grey-brown back, dark wings with a white patch, and rufous flanks. Females are duller with a brown mask and no white wing-patch. It breeds in Northeast China, Korea, Japan, and far-eastern Russia. Northern populations migrate south for winter. This shrike prefers open habitats like farmland and woodland edges. It's a "sit-and-wait" predator, perching prominently to hunt insects, lizards, and crustaceans. Known as "butcher birds," they impale prey on thorns or barbed wire for storage or easier consumption. They also use food caches to attract mates. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) 📷: Photo by Takashi_Yanagisawa via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/wild-animals-bird-natural-outdoors-3262980/ UUEV

Yes... may I help you? 😄 Yet another male Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio). These are so common right now in the Hungarian countryside. They are literally everywhere. Most of the adults leave by late summer and in the fall it is almost all juveniles. #BirdingHungary #birds #shrikes
Male Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio). The commonest summer shrike in Hungary by a big margin. In the countryside, these are all over the place. #BirdingHungary #birds #shrikes
One of my favorite summertime #birds .. Lesser Gray Shrike (Lanius minor). It has one of the longest migrations of any shrike, travelling from Eastern Europe and Western Asia to South Africa and back every year. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #shrikes
