I am sitting here holding a (PB new) copy of #SilentSpring by #RachelCarson in my left hand. I haven't touched this book...and don't ask me why, it's been 30 years.
I hope it's the one where she talks about #tidepools. That really fascinated me.

De cartoon toont drie bijna identieke auto’s in 1990, 2020 en 2050. In 1990 zit de voorruit vol dode insecten en kijkt de bestuurder geïrriteerd. In 2020 is de ruit schoon en oogt de bestuurder tevreden. In 2050 is de auto leeg: geen bestuurder meer. De achtergrond kleurt steeds warmer, van blauw naar rood. De titel – “Everything you always wanted to know about mass extinction but were afraid to ask…” – is ironisch: het beeld legt zonder woorden uit wat massale uitsterving betekent. De afwezigheid van insecten (de bekende “windshield phenomenon”) staat symbool voor biodiversiteitsverlies. Wat eerst als comfortabel wordt ervaren (schone ruit) blijkt een voorbode van menselijke ondergang. De jaartallen suggereren een geleidelijk maar onafwendbaar proces. De leegte in 2050 benadrukt dat de mens afhankelijk is van ecosystemen: zonder insecten geen bestuiving, voedselketens of leefbare wereld. In het licht van actueel nieuws over insectensterfte, klimaatverandering, hittegolven en rapporten van IPBES en VN over biodiversiteitscrises, krijgt de cartoon extra urgentie. Hij bekritiseert menselijke kortzichtigheid: we vieren gemak en vooruitgang, terwijl we de voorwaarden voor ons eigen bestaan vernietigen.
