Steven Soderbergh Addresses Lucasfilm Frustrations Over Disney Calling Off ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ Steven Soderbergh, the filmmaker who was supposed to direct the failed movie _The Hunt for Ben Solo_ , has weighed in on how he and the people at Lucasfilm were disappointed by Disney’s decision not to proceed with the movie. **To recap**: Adam Driver revealed in October 2025 that he was supposed to return as Ben Solo in a movie set after the events of _The Rise of Skywalker_. The project, which he pitched to Lucasfilm, boasted a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns that had then-Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, as well as other development executives like Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, very excited. Steven Soderbergh was going to direct it, with his wife Rebecca Blunt also on board as a producer. Lucasfilm had even set a tentative start date for the project. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman ultimately rejected the pitch, believing audiences would be confused about Ben Solo’s survival following his apparent demise. Now, speaking to **BK Mag**, Soderbergh was asked about the cancellation of the film, which led to his candid thoughts on the situation: > **BK Mag:** Since you brought up _Star Wars_ , I was reading the Kathleen Kennedy exit interview again before we got on the call. I think what surprised a lot of people from the outside was that it appears it was basically a green light, and then essentially the head of Disney kills it for “story reasons,” which has never stopped them from doing anything in the _Star Wars_ universe. And I was wondering if that elucidated anything for you? Did you know how disappointed she was? > > **Steven Soderbergh:** No, it was no surprise that she was frustrated. We were all frustrated. You know, that was two and a half years of free work for me and Adam and Rebecca Blunt. When Adam and I discussed him talking about it publicly, I said, “Look, do not editorialize or speculate about the why. Just say what happened, because all we know is what happened.” The stated reason was “We don’t think Ben Solo could be alive.” And that was all we were told. And so there’s nothing to do about it, you know, except move on. And as I posted, I’d kind of made the movie in my head, and just felt bad that nobody else was going to get to see it. I thought the conversation was strictly going to be a practical one—where they go, what is this going to cost? And I had a really good answer for that. But it never even got to that point. It’s insane. We’re all very disappointed. As part of her exit interviews with various Hollywood trades, Kathleen Kennedy hinted at the possibility that _The Hunt For Ben Solo_ could still be greenlit under the new regimes at Lucasfilm and Disney, but the decision was no longer up to her as she is no longer in charge of Lucasfilm. Fans certainly haven’t given up, with high-profile ads in Times Square and even Toys for Tots charity drives. ##### Grant Davis (Pomojema) + posts Grant has been a fan of _Star Wars_ for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. Soderbergh: ‘Hunt for Ben Solo’ was first Lucasfilm-approved movie Disney rejected Last week, Adam Driver caused a massive stir in the Star Wars community when he revealed that, contrary to online fan belief, he had actively tried to revive his character, Ben Solo/Kylo Ren, in a new movie titled _The Hunt for Ben Solo_. It was supposed to be set after the events of terrible _The Rise of Skywalker_. Adam had a dream, a script, and a director all lined up. That director was none other than Steven Soderbergh. The project actually got further along than Adam let on. In fact, it was approved on behalf of Lucasfilm by Star Wars mega producer Kathleen Kennedy, but ultimately denied by Disney’s on/off again CEO Bob Iger. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, Soderbergh shared his side of the story on social media, revealing that Kathy K herself told him that _The Hunt for Ben Solo_ was the first-ever film that Lucasfilm approved but Disney rejected, > Steven Soderbergh is speaking out about his unmade “Star Wars” movie, “The Hunt For Ben Solo.” After would-be star Adam Driver revealed the project in an interview with AP on Monday, the “Ocean’s Eleven” director took to BlueSky to write that he “did not enjoy” hiding the project from fans, but emphasized the importance of keeping it under wraps. > > “For the record, I did not enjoy lying about the existence of ‘THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO,’ but it really did need to remain a secret…until now!” Soderbergh wrote on Monday. > > On Friday, he added, “Also, in the aftermath of the ‘HFBS’ situation, I asked Kathy Kennedy if LFL had ever turned in a finished movie script for greenlight to Disney and had it rejected. She said no, this was a first.” > > “The Hunt for Ben Solo” was set to take place after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” and would have followed Driver’s Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, on a search for redemption. Driver called the unmade film “one of the coolest” projects he’s ever been a part of. > > Soderbergh had previously told AP of developing “The Hunt for Ben Solo,” “I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.” > > On Friday, Collider reported that a group of “Star Wars” fanatics paid for a plane towing a banner reading “Save ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’” to fly over Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Calif. A reporter for the outlet was able to take pictures of the stunt while on location. [From Variety] This whole thing is just completely wild. I cannot believe that the first Star Wars movie that Disney rejected happened to be a Steven Soderbergh script about Darth Vader’s grandson/Leia and Han Solo’s son. The sequel trilogy left so much on the table and yet, there’s been almost nothing to rectify any of it. Like, however you feel about whether that movie had any business being made, it’s still crazy that Bob Iger rejected a Soderbergh-helmed Star Wars project. Who does that?! Sure, _The Rise of Skywalker_ completely sucked, but surely they could have made something work here. I’ve been trying to discover if there’s been any official reasoning behind the decision to scrap _THFBS_ , but all I could find was the excuse that execs “didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive” after the events of _The Rise of Skywalker_. While I know that many of you are down with a Ben Solo movie, I’m still not convinced. Driver and Soderbergh coming in hot really makes me wonder, though. Are we about to get news from a “source” that claims the movie was on all along? > For the record, I did not enjoy lying about the existence of THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO, but it really did need to remain a secret…until now! > > — bitchuation.bsky.social (@bitchuation.bsky.social) October 20, 2025 at 6:18 PM > Also, in the aftermath of the HFBS situation, I asked Kathy Kennedy if LFL had ever turned in a finished movie script for greenlight to Disney and had it rejected. Adam Driver says Disney passed on his Kylo Ren movie, written with Steven Soderbergh The last Star Wars movie to hit theaters was 2019’s _The Rise of Skywalker_. There was so much toxicity surrounding the sequel trilogy for daring to have a diverse cast and storylines that didn’t cater to the Extremely Online Fanboys, and many of its stars have spoken out about how bad their experience was. While the Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren characters have appeared in Disney+’s animated series _Star Wars Resistance_ , none of the main characters have gotten their own live action spin-off series. In _SWR_ , Oscar Isaacs returns as Poe, but Adam Driver does not voice Ren. As for the lack of continuation of any of the sequel storylines, I’d just assumed that no one on the studio or the talent end wanted to touch any of that mess. Well, as it turns out, Driver actually did want to revisit his role. In an interview with the AP, he revealed that he approached SW mega producer Kathleen Kennedy about a Kylo Ren/Ben Solo-centric movie titled _The Hunt for Ben Solo_. He even got Steven Soderbergh to help him develop a script. At the end of the day, however, Lucasfilm was into the idea, Disney was not. > “I always was interested in doing another Star Wars,” Driver told the Associated Press in an interview published Monday. “I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. [Producer] Kathleen [Kennedy] had reached out. I always said: With a great director and a great story, I’d be there in a second. I loved that character and loved playing him.” > > After he took an idea to director Steve Soderbergh, with events set after 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker, Kennedy and a writer, Scott Z. Burns, of Contagion and The Bourne Ultimatum, got involved too. > > “It was called The Hunt for Ben Solo and it was really cool,” Driver said. “But it is no more, so I can finally talk about it.” > > Cause of death: rejection. > > “We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it,” Driver said. “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.” > > Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Disney and Lucasfilm for comment on Driver’s remarks. > > Soderbergh said in a statement to AP that “I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.” > > Driver has previously spoken about his character’s arc having morphed into something else over the course of making the trilogy Driver was involved in. He was originally written as darker and didn’t become softer over time. > > “I had an overall arc in mind that [director J.J. Abrams] wanted to do, which, you know, then changed,” Driver said on The Rich Eisen Show in 2024. “His idea was that [Kylo’s] journey was almost the opposite of Vader. Where Vader starts the most confident and the most committed to the dark side, and then by the last movie, he’s the most vulnerable and weak — he wanted to start with the opposite.” [From Entertainment Weekly] I’m kinda shocked that Disney didn’t take advantage of Steven Soderbergh’s offer to make a _Star Wars_ movie for them, but I’m with Bob Igor and Alan Bergman on this one. The franchise had a good thing going on in 2021 thanks to the popularity of _The Mandalorian_ and its other TV series. They didn’t need more movies. People were finally forgetting about the disastrous way they dropped the ball on _The Rise of Skywalker_. Why remind them? Hell, even 2025 is too soon to give a crap about Ben Solo. I suppose whatever happens next will depend on the success of _The Mandalorian and Grogu_, which comes out in May 2026. That said, I’m so over the Skywalker family saga. I want something new! Let’s explore what Manny Jancinto’s The Stranger/Qimir is up to (RIP _The Acolyte_). Give me more of the _Andor_ world with a Cleya, Val, or Cinta spinoff. Or, just come up with something else entirely original, like _Skeleton Crew_. There’s a whole galaxy out there with plenty of stories to be told.
