ChatGPT IMG: 0,5-1 kWh, 2-5L of water, 0,02-0,15g of CO2. * It sems that Whatsapp’s energy usage is only declared in CO2 1 Data taken for a standard response of 100 words. 2 The images generated during the week of 05/04/2025 wated 216 million of water litres. According to experts, even though everything generates a waste of water and energy, Generative AIs are the last straw. 3 The Spanish Institute of Enginery that a single ChatGPT inquiry triples the waste of a Google search. 4 Acording to this data, a single ChatGPT inquiry would generate the same CO2 as sending about 20 WhatsApps or Google Searches (4/0,2?). 5 Generating a single image wastes as much energy as fully-charging a mobile phone. 6 Even though generating a single image with ChatGPT sems to have little impact, its massive use multiplies its environmental impact (withouth taking into account the water and energy waste). 7 A Single Google search uses 0,2 water galons aprox. (about 0,9L). It is important to point out that this waste is for a search that can bear you thousands of results, while the waste of ChatGPT is only for 100 words.

ChatGPT IMG: 0,5-1 kWh, 2-5L de agua, 0,02-0,15g of CO2. * Parece ser que el gasto de WhatsApp tan sólo se declara en CO2 1 Datos tomados con una respuesta estándar de 100 palabras. 2 Las imágenes generadas con IA durante la semana del 05/04/2025 consumieron 216 millones de litros de agua. Según los expertos, aunque todo genere un gasto de agua o energía, las IAs generativas son la gota que colma el vaso. 3 El instituto de Ingeniería de España señala que una consulta a ChatGPT triplica el gasto de una búsqueda de Google. 4 Según éstos datos, una sola consulta de ChatGPT generaría el mismo CO2 que mandar cerca de 20 WhatsApps o consultas a Google (4/0,2?). 5 Generar una sola imagen gasta tanto como cargar un teléfono móvil al completo. 6 Aunque generar una sola imagen con ChatGPT parezca tener poco impacto, su uso masivo multiplica su efecto ambiental (eso sin tener en cuenta el gasto de agua y electricidad). 7 Una búsqueda de Google utiliza aproximadamente 0,2 galones de agua (unos 0,9L). Es importante señalar que éste es el gasto de una búsqueda, donde se pueden encontrar miles de resultados, mientras que el gasto de ChatGPT es por tan sólo 100 palabras.
