Photo de la quatrième de couverture : L’identité s’est imposée comme une question politique centrale de notre époque, mais les débats qui s’y rapportent demeurent le plus souvent posés dans des termes caricaturaux. Pour les clarifier, Stuart Hall étudie ici la construction discursive de trois de ses formes principales : la race, l’ethnicité et la nation. Car si chacune de ces formes est le produit de longs processus de sédimentation historique, leur caractère construit ne doit pas nous conduire à croire qu’il serait possible de se débarrasser de ces catégories comme on dissipe une illusion. Au contraire, il est impératif d’appréhender les ressorts de leur persistance, et notamment leur inscription dans le fonctionnement du langage, afin de comprendre comment elles configurent notre quotidien et le cours de l’histoire, ainsi que d’envisager les modalités de leurs usages susceptibles de nourrir une pratique émancipatrice. Dans un contexte où la mondialisation et les migrations tendent à scinder l’identité de son lieu concret d’origine, et alors que le racisme prolifère sur fond de déni de sa genèse coloniale, Stuart Hall expose de manière vive et concise les enjeux contemporains d’une approche politique de la différence, tout en proposant une introduction éclairante au champ des cultural studies.
