And @reptroycarter.bsky.social brings it home: his home state is ready to build and create joibs with shovels in the ground for #broadband, but Trump's Commerce Dept. is pushing pause, causing delay, and promising to divert money to Musk for a serice that is already available. #subcommtech

As @energycommerce.bsky.social ranking member Pallone rightly notes: Elon Musk is a grifter, and Republicans are sitting by as he looks to capture BEAD money, while they have moved NO money out the door yet to states ready to build. #broadband #subcommtech

At the #subcommtech hearing on federal #broadband supports, @dorismatsui.bsky.social nails it: talk of “technology neutrality” by Republicans and Trump better not be cover to pull back fiber commitments and hand subsidies to President I mean Elon Musk.

Rep. Joyce continues the down dais trend on the GOP side of asking legitimate questions of both parties and not just playing politics. This is such a refreshing change. #subcommtech #FCCoversight

We’re all going to miss Anna Eshoo’s fearlessness on this subcommittee. But then when she asked Chair Rosenworcel to explain why Starlink shouldn’t get RDOF money to serve highway medians and parking lots, Chair Latta went ballistic when Rosenworcel ran over by a minute. #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Fireworks there. Or at least gavel bangs. Rep. Anna Eshoo brilliantly upbraids Commissioner Carr for constantly kicking down at workers and consumer protections, and his claim that only by stripping those protections away can we have quality broadband. #BEAD #subcommtech #FCCoversight

I will never understand this Carr-led effort to claim that FCC forbearance from its own regulations and even statutes is the same thing as preemption of state law. It just isn’t the same question. Obviously. #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Rep. Dingell calls for #ACP renewal, then pivots to her efforts & Chair Rosenworcel’s already in progress move to protect domestic violence survivors against being tracked by their connected cars. @freepress.bsky.social comments here. #Subcommtech #FCCoversight

Huge respect for Rep. Curtis (R-Utah) using his time to ask real policy and measurement questions of both Chairwoman Rosenworcel and Commissioner Carr. It’s so rare to get a break from the culture wars and pro-business talking points from that side of the aisle. #Subcommtech #FCCoversight

In attacking protections against digital discrimination in a bipartisan infrastructure bill, Commissioner Carr resorts to the famous “it was a really long bill” defense. Always so intellectually satisfying. #Subcommtech #FCCoversight

Whoops. Rep. Carter takes aim at the trial bar because apparently he wants disparate impact discrimination to be totally allowed against his constituents. He forgets that Republicans who want to repeal #Section230 are supposed to love the trial bar now. #Subcommtech #FCCoversight

Restraint . . . tested. It’s utterly ridiculous. Shocking news: internet speeds increase over time as technology evolves. Ipso facto: regulation bad! (Pay no attention to the fact that speeds increased with #TitleII in place too.) #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Commissioner Carr in the past has pretended to be mayor of towns whose muni broadband networks he doesn’t like; and even opined on foreign policy. (Talk about regulatory humility!) But using his FCC perch for a collateral attack on the NDIA is still pretty remarkable. #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Oh look: Commissioner Carr doesn’t support the FCC’s 2025 budget.

He finally found a Project 2025 he doesn’t embrace and endorse.

Good to hear Rep. Dingell on the Democratic side call out Commissioner Carr’s contributions to the Heritage Foundation’s radical Christian Nationalist “Project 2025.” I wonder if Carr agrees with Heritage’s zeal to spill Leftists’ blood. #subcommtech #FCCoversight

You really have to wonder: has CMR ever read Scalia’s dissent in Brand X, about how the FCC not only could but SHOULD treat broadband as a telecom service? You’d have to guess she hasn’t, right? #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Though it’s nice to hear Ranking Member Matsui call for renewal of #ACP funding — just in time for Chairwoman Rodgers to come in (1) praising discrimination and (2) shouting about just how competitive the broadband market is. 😂😂 #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Watch my restraint today, as I *don’t* give in to the temptation to debunk the same, tired Republican talking points on #TitleII and #NetNeutrality and broadband investment for like literally the hundredth time. #subcommtech #FCCoversight

Anyhow, here is the testimony today from Kate Tummarello at Engine Advocacy, the lone voice on the witness panel (and maybe the only one at all today who'll speak, from table or dais?) supporting #Section230. #subcommtech

That's a really bizarre line from Carrie Goldberg, that #Section230 was passed as an accident, and all Congress cared about back then was stopping porn. Somebody better go tell @wyden.senate.gov that he didn't do what he did on purpose to protect online expression and ecosystems! #subcommtech

(Though I always have to chuckle a bit when GOP lawmakers embrace torts as a remedy to hold big companies accountable. It's such a 180 from their attitude towards other American companies, and their age-old war with the trial attorneys bar.) #Section230 #subcommtech

Free Press Action's Matt Wood Testifies That Section 230 Is Necessary and Any Fixes Must Strike the Right Balance In testimony before a House committee, Wood explained why Congress must preserve the powerful benefits of this law.

As I said when testified on this topic in 2021 (next to today's witness Carrie Goldberg too), we agree with the need for recalibrations to hold platforms liable when they continue to distribute third-party content that they know is harmful. #Section230 #subcommtech www.freepress.net/news/press-r...

This is a line we'll hear today. The Committee's goal is not to sunset #Section230, just to reform it. So they say a sunset bill is not really aimed at getting a sunset.... even as Rep. Pallone says the law "has outlived its usefulness." 🤔 #subcommtech

Really bummed to be missing @HouseCommerce's #SubCommTech hearing, "Algorithms: How Companies’ Decisions About Data and Content Impact Consumers," but at least I can get depressed reading witness statements in absentia:
