So lovely to deliver a bite sized session to talk about moving to a strong start to A Level Maths #TTRConnect despite recovering from laryngitis and not being 100% on the day! Lovely to hear many experienced speakers and some first time too. Also lovely to see a fellow GLOW speaker too! #Mathstoday

Had a great time yesterday at @ttradioofficial.bsky.social Connect event.

Some thought-provoking ideas that came out from today from the Primary Strand. Thanks to Huma Mirza for being an excellent host for this sector and letting me share some ideas 🙏

Amber Hadley speaking to us about practicing oracy the maths classroom!
Challenging us to use this to move away from “maths lessons are a loop of question and answer”, “not a maths person” and “answers are more important than the reasoning”.

Finally slot is on poetry. #TTRConnect has delivered on so many things today!
Common thread has been so many speakers working in schools serving disadvantaged communities.
Poetry has its place in KS3 and can be a key driver in engaging pupils- not just an add on because the Nat Curr says do it!

I got a bit caught up in Tom Bennison’s first task… and he isn’t standing in frame… but some brilliant points about variation and task design here 🤩

There seems to be a strong correlation between teachers working in schools in deprived communities and their willingness to spend a Saturday in the company of other teachers wanting to get better at teaching, at events such as #TTRConnect.

I am trying not too fangirl too much!
Getting students to think differently is the topic...
Emphasis on knowledge..but too many students JUST focusing on regurgitating this and not thinking!
How do we get them to think...

The fabulous @studymaths.bsky.social talking to us all about inner and outer tasks… what are you asking the students to do on the surface? But what is the mathematical idea that it really uncovers?

'From mollycoddling to meaningful Inclusion'
Goal: An inclusive school. Everyone behaves, attends, has needs met, etc.
Everyone agrees. No one thinks this is a bad idea.
Reality: School systems are broken. Behaviour is challenging

Now at #TTRConnect Ross McGill on why 'Live Marking is so Old School':
Marking 'drives teachers bonkers' even live marking.
Marking is one of the biggest drivers for people leaving the profession (workload).
What Ross has seen on his travels:

Next up #TTRConnect, Writing Revolution.
Keen on this as writ9ng is my AfD in terms 9f teaching!
I find it tough and I don't feel confident so hoping for some top tips!
First up: Writing is important...low literacy costs the economy.
Its worth 50% of a GCSE grade so its key.

#TTRConnect now Dr Sarah Dowey talks about building an English Curriculum across a large MAT.
Bookletised curriculum...but it is NOT taught by 'a robot army'. Teachers should 'have the agency to adapt and deliver according to the way THEY teach'
Core knowledge is 'non-negotiable' but delivery is!

Mehmet Zekay on Germs in education 🦠
Misconceptions are the fastest growing issue in our classroom - they replicate fast and cause trouble. So…
How do we check that students really understand what we have taught?

Next up #TTRConnect is live marking. (I struggle with this so hoping for some tips!).
Feedback whilst students are STILL working...is not interrupting.
But...they need to know HOW to respond to live marking (where I need to improve).
Make sure you focus on something specific: use of quotation, etc

Loving the talk about modelling writing...it needs to be LIVE!
And articulate 'the messy architecture of thought' behind writing.
And linking to collaborating work with the pupils as a live correction and improvement process!

SO well put by @funkypedagogy.bsky.social…
We’re getting increasingly distant from the thing we’re doing or trying to fix.
Or where the idea came from.
Or even if it’s what children really need.
Does it matter what the current research trend is?
What are we really wanting to achieve?

“Teaching is neuroscience in the dark… it is the ultimate act of faith.”
@funkypedagogy.bsky.social says we’re trying to affect structural change in a child’s brain, but we have no way to check that it is working.
