Episodes like Put Upon Percy, Rusty and the Boulder and Toby and the Flood have high stakes action scenes where the engines are inches away from death's grip. There's also some creepy episodes with darker themes regarding kidnapping, like Stepney Gets Lost.
Episodes like Duncan Gets Spooked and Haunted Henry have a spooky atmosphere with nerve racking ghost tales and encounters, with creepy sets adding to the unnerving atmosphere.
You compare this to TUGS, which also had plenty of explosive action and moments of peril. Munitions is probably the best example, with the VHS version of said episode going as far as to imply Big Mickey dies!
And lets not forget the spooks and surprises in Ghosts. Some echoes of this episode may be found in Haunted Henry and Toby's Discovery.

Am I the only one that thinks Thomas & Friends Season 5 is very similar in tone to TUGS? I mean, Britt Allcroft gave David Mitton and his team creative control to make that season as cinematic as possible. Seriously, I can't be the only one.
