Happy #TermTuesday! 📖👀

Trade books can be found on many university press's lists, as UPs can publish for trade and academic markets. Many UPs have a regional trade list w/ books specific to their geographic location.

Happy #TermTuesday!

Monographs generally comprise a bulk of many university press's lists as they are books based on extensive research, written for an academic audience, and provide a detailed exploration of a subject.

NB: University presses publish a wide array of other books, too!!

WOW! Happy September!

It's #TermTuesday! Exclusive review can give editors a fair opportunity to consider a project, especially in competitive situations. Exclusive review does not mean either party, press or author, is committed to publishing the book.

Some books might feature a gallery of images rather than having the images spread out through the text. Including a gallery is usually a strategic decision depending on the project, as galleries can affect production costs & affect the reader's navigation of the text.

We are back from the weekend with another #TermTuesday!

Last week we covered what a book series is, so we're following that up by talking about series editors and what they do.

A text bob describing the term "Book Series" as: "A book series publishes stand-alone books that, taken together, contribute to a shared, defined conversation. This conversation might be disciplinary, geographic, formal, thematic, and/or methodological. By creating a dedicated space for books that share a common concern or approach, a book series can make an impact on a different scale than a single book."

Happy #TermTuesday, folks!

Book series are common among presses and play varying roles in their list of publications (depending on the press & the active series they have). Series are a great way to establish niches, revitalize topics, and make space for underrepresented voices.

A text box defining the term "Extended Text" (also called long descriptions) as the descriptive counterpart to alt-text as per accessibility standards. Extended text is meant to provide a longer, more detailed description of complex figures when necessary. Unlike alt-text, which has a length limit, extended text can be as long as necessary to explain the figure in detail and its relevance to the manuscript. Extended text does not need to be included in the manuscript if the alt-text sufficiently describes the figure.

Extended text is used to describe complex figures in addition to alt-text (when needed).

A text box graphic describing the term "Alternative text" or "alt text" as a description of the appearance and function of any figure (graphs, charts, photographs, illustrations, etc) in a manuscript. Alt text is a primary component of accessibility standards, ensuring those using a screen reader can understand what the image is and why it is included in the manuscript without having to see it.

#TermTuesday repost!

We forgot to include alt text in this yesterday and were helpfully reminded by some folks online. Many thanks for your patience and understanding!

Guidelines have been established so alt-text is written appropriately. And who writes alt text might vary from press to press.

Happy #TermTuesday! Today we're tackling accessibility (in the broadest sense).

Accessible publishing is a nuanced and *important* aspect of book publishing. The way accessibility standards are implemented will vary from department-to-department and press-to-press.

Happy #TermTuesday! Today we're talking about page proofs, which is where a book really starts to take shape.

Another Tuesday? Another term!

Clearing permissions is a crucial step but can be complex and nuanced due to the nature of copyright law. For a more detailed overview of the permissions process, please review

Woohoo! Happy Tuesday, it's #TermTuesday!

The structure of a press's Faculty Editorial Board can differ from press to press (especially when it comes to consortium presses). Projects published by a press generally should have Editorial Board approval before moving to launch/transmittal.

Happy #TermTuesday, PIPsters!

💸 What the heck is a subvention? These are usually arranged by acquisitions editors before a book is launched/transmitted. Given the flexible nature of subventions, when and how they are used depends on their source. 💸

Circling back to peer review for #TermTuesday ...what is a split review? They're more common than you think, and the job of an acquisitions editor is to navigate the differences and help the author through it, too!

It's #TermTuesday and we're talking P&Ls! Presses usually have a standard, in-house form or spreadsheet that varies from place to place. What gets factored in, when this is checked, and how depends on the publisher!

(If you're at a press, do your P&Ls have a different name?)

Happy #TermTuesday, PIPsters! Ever wonder what a split run is? 📖

This is often press, book, and discipline specific: one field might usually have a hardcover initial run with a trailing paperback, another might only publish paperbacks, and some are best served by a split run!

Did you read last week's term and wonder what "metadata" even is? We've got you covered. It's #TermTuesday!

Metadata mainly falls into marketing's purview, but all departments will help contribute the necessary information (page count! pub date! subject area! BISACS! price! ... the list goes on)!

Happy #TermTuesday, PIPsters! What does it mean when a book is "Launched" or "Transmitted"?

The specific workflow varies from press to press, but Launch/Transmittal is the phase of a manuscript's life where the rest of the Press (Mkting, EDP, etc) can begin sinking their teeth into the project.

This #TermTuesday, we're revisiting ✨ BISAC Codes ✨ from our term archives!! This is often in marketing's wheelhouse, but depending on the press, acquisitions may contribute to choosing the codes as well. 📖 📖

Hello and happy #TermTuesday! This week we have the advance contract.

These can be a powerful tool of acquisition—a promise to an author before the book is even written that the press wants it. Policies on advance contracts vary press to press!
