Texas faces record-breaking electricity demand this summer Texas anticipates a significant rise in electricity demand this summer, with forecasts predicting a peak usage of approximately 84,000 megawatts. This potential record usage surpasses the 77,000 megawatts recorded in May of last year and falls just short of the all-time high of 85.5 megawatts established on August 10, 2023. Rising temperatures, with many areas expected to see temperatures reaching 100 degrees or higher, are the primary driver of this increased demand, as residents ramp up air conditioner use. Fortunately, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) reports that the grid is prepared to manage this anticipated surge, largely due to increased solar power generation. ERCOT officials emphasize their ongoing monitoring of grid conditions and their readiness to deploy necessary resources to ensure reliable power supply.
