Finance Minister Orders Task Force to Probe Strong Baht and Suspicious Capital Inflows The Ministry of Finance has been instructed to form a task force to investigate the recent strengthening of the baht and significant capital inflows, amid concerns that some funds may come from unregulated or suspicious sources. This move follows Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s call for urgent action and close coordination among relevant agencies. In January 2025, the exchange rate was approximately 34.27 baht per US dollar.

The Ministry of Finance has formed a task force to investigate the baht, which has strengthened by 8% this year from 34.27 to 31.78 per US dollar, amid concerns that some capital inflows may come from unregulated or suspicious sources.

Thai Chamber of Commerce Warns Rapidly Rising Baht Threatens Exports, Tourism, and Agriculture The baht’s rapid appreciation, which fell below 32 per US dollar yesterday—its strongest level against the greenback in more than four years—and is trading at 31.70 this afternoon, is out of step with Thailand’s underlying economic conditions and is placing significant pressure on exports, tourism, and agriculture, according to Poj Aramwatananont, chairperson of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. Exporters are facing higher costs relative to competing countries, reducing international sales and foreign revenue.

Chairperson of the Thai Chamber of Commerce warned that the rapid appreciation of the baht, reaching its strongest level against the US dollar in over four years, is putting significant pressure on Thailand’s exports, tourism, and agricultural sectors.
