Nice bonus finds at the library stall in Tesco this morning. Nothing will beat the time I found five #CAN CDs but this runs it very, very close. I’ve also previously found #PeterGabriel Plays Live and now this great little selection, #TheBooRadleys #TheWeddingPresent and #DonnaSummer 😊💿
CD#107 #TheBooRadleys #CmonKids the 1996 reaction to ‘the hit’ was to retrench into strangeness. A good deal messier than Wake Up, many of the songs wander about all over the place. The writing doesn’t seem as consistent as Giant Steps, but it’s much more in that vein. Better than I remembered.
CD#106 #TheBooRadleys #FromTheBenchAtBelvedere 1995 CD single. The main song is a gently lilting melody and pretty good it is too. Then comes Hi Falutin, all fuzzy guitars. Crushed is a slow shuffle in a scuzzy indie style. Almost Nearly there is a slight slow pop song. It’s all fine.
CD#105 #TheBooRadleys #WakeUp What happened? They follow Giant Steps with this. Very poppy (especially hit Wake Up Boo) & with way less scope. In parts it’s really good (Joel, Reaching Out) but it seems like a different band.
Released in 1995 during the height of britpop mania maybe explains things.
CD#104 #TheBooRadleys #GiantSteps An absolute classic album. The experimentation is dizzying. Dub bass, woodwind, brass, ballads, pop, feedback, noisy guitars. Distilling all this: the mighty Lazarus. But its totally compelling over the full 64 minutes. Where did this come from? And where did it go?
CD#103 #TheBooRadleys #EverythingsAlrightForever shoegaze album from 1992. What an opening track Spaniard is! Not sure it gets that good again. Lots of songs with big washes of guitar noise, as the genre demands & it’s all pretty listenable if a little unvaried. Smile Fades & Skyscraper were good.
