Tidal Forces and Orbital Evolution of Habitable Zone Planets How do tidal forces determine a planet’s orbital evolution, specifically planets in the habitable zone? This is what a recently submitted study hopes to address as an international team of researchers...

Stunning image of the Tadpole Galaxy (Arp 188), a spiral galaxy with a massive 280,000 light-year long tail, created by a gravitational interaction with another galaxy. The image, from the Hubble Legacy Archive, shows bright blue star clusters in the tail and a distant intruder galaxy visible in the upper right. The Tadpole Galaxy is located 420 million light-years away in the constellation Draco.

Close-up color image of Phobos, Mars' doomed moon, captured by the Mars Express spacecraft. The image reveals Phobos' cratered surface and the grooves indicating the intense gravitational forces pulling it towards Mars. The scale bar indicates a distance of 5 kilometers. In about 100 million years, Phobos will likely crash into Mars or break apart, forming a ring around the planet.

A composite color image of the faint globular star cluster Palomar 13, located in the halo of our Milky Way Galaxy. The image shows a sparse collection of stars, with a brighter foreground star near the bottom creating imaging artifacts. Palomar 13 has an eccentric orbit, bringing it close to the galactic center every billion years, causing its stars to be stripped away by tidal forces. This could be its final approach to the galactic center.
