The first time Lucy and I met this little creek canyon had just entered my radar and I think I might have done one other shoot there already. To this day I come back to the files from our first shoot and learn new lessons. Mostly it's because I knew less then than I do now, by a wide margin. There's enough that worked and a few images that I'm simply enthralled with that I don't gnash my teeth all THAT much but then there are things where I am puzzled by how to edit or approach the shots in a way that makes any sense. You might know that feeling? I'm not so talented a technical photographer that I can produce something visually striking at the drop of a hat. I feel like I really wrestle with the tableau presented and how to interpret it so that it matches either my eye or my imagination. And let's be clear: Lucy is objectively BEAUTIFUL and has an eye for fitting herself into an environment. These are wonderful things. Left to her own devices in a wilderness she is a mythic nymph, an archetype or a whimsical flash of light in the forest gloom. I'll place a hand on a bible and swear to it because I've SEEN it. These pictures hint at it. And I find that when I'm working with her I want to shoot that way -- I want to place her wholly and organically within the environment we've chosen. This particular image might be one of the better examples of that impulse.

I often find myself enjoying glamour or pinup or classic boudoir photos here on the social medias. I've never felt like I have a lot of interest in that particular vibe for my own work, however. I'd prefer to find that flash of pale skin in the gloaming, to suggest an outline or to hide a body in dappled sunlight. Again, I have a lot of respect for someone who can place someone against a backdrop and come up with a creative image (there are a couple of fellow Portlanders, in particular, I'm thinking of here -- they're amazing!). I need more help than that. I tend to rely on shadows, filters, walls of plastic or fabric...anything that can intercede on behalf of mystery and confusion. Is that a person in there? Maybe. Maybe.

So these moments when a model presents a clear and present image are rough for me. Do I honor the moment? Do I go ahead and fuck it up? My natural impulses result in a lot of blown shots and not in a good way. One in twenty might be a keeper. Maybe fewer. I can't be AFRAID of that result because, damnit, that's the GOAL but there's still that little voice from the back, nagging "make it pretty, you fool! nobody likes your weird shit!" LOL. Fuck you, little voice. We're going there.

More challenging is how to leverage the constant exertion of my model. I can try to explain but I'm often unsure of what IS going to work, let alone HOW to get there. So we bumble along, them looking for ways to be part of the environment and be graceful or active or candid and me wondering how to take a perfectly good beauty shot and mess it up in a way that will make it totally unappealing to the general public while delighting my own sense of humor.

Eight years, now. Eight years of trying to hide people in images, changing my mind and trying to tell their story. Changing my mind again and going back to hiding them.

I say it a lot and I very much mean it. To Lucy, and every other art model who is patient enough to return to my gnawing stupidity with a camera, I owe a great thanks. I learn something on every shoot, some small lesson driven home by whatever failure I'm experiencing. More importantly, I learn something every time I return to the files and try to re-interpret. I suspect that other photographers find this as well and that this ongoing relationship with the edit process may be one reason why we hold onto photographs for unreasonable periods of time. We are searching for the moment when we are FINISHED in order to share the thing. I have more than a few pictures that are so emotionally intimate that I would hesitate to hold them up to the brash gaze of social media. They are too important to me, too private. Or they're just not strong enough to withstand the public yet.

I've returned to this particular little rivulet dozens of times and it has never disappointed. The deep green of the forest and the rush of water that carries away language creates a momentary Brigadoon for our fantasies. It's the perfect setting for an "environmental nude" and I look forward to another year and another attempt to perfect the inarticulate story.

A wider frame felt right for these. Long ramblings in the alt-text. @lucyartmodel.bsky.social revisiting the site of our first shoot and confirming that I am merely the lens to document her presence. #oregon #visitor #cominghome #idyllic #pnwwonderland #pdxphotographer #touringmodel
