A Spokes email to an enquirer, explaining the background to the bad original Elm Row design... Thank-you for your email. Spokes totally agrees with your comments about the arrangement of the cycleways and bus stop at Elm Row (Valvona & Crolla). We objected to the design proposal and have been pushing, with Living Streets and others, to get the design changed. It now has been and works are currently underway to construct a new 2-way cycleway between the bus stop and the parking for the shops. The tram extension project had over-arching powers over design and construction on Leith Walk and a major factor at Elm Row has been the perceived need for lots of parking - fortunately this is no longer the case. This was not our "solution" - the council and their contractors are responsible for the design. Spokes has objected to many aspects of the Leith Walk cycleway, including - the reduced height of the kerb separation from the footway (only 25mm); the sharp bends (since rectified); the poor colour differentiation of the cycleway surface; the unevenness of the cycleway surface; the proximity of vertical structures (bus shelters, poles, etc) to the cycleway (there should be at least 500m clearance). Hopefully we will see further improvements made and lessons learned for future cycleways. The quality of the cycleways that are being implemented as CEC Active Travel projects (the City Centre West East Link and now the Foot of the Walk to Commercial Street, for example) are of a much higher standard, though not without some flaws. Spokes will continue to work to get the council and others to build cycleways that are safe for all. regards, Martin McDonnell Spokes Planning Group and lead on Trams to Newhaven project

🤔 The original design was by #TramsToNewhaven, to maximise🚘 parking space. We opposed it from the start.

👍Now that #TramsToNewhaven is 'complete,' Council is to follow up more of our remedial suggestions..
- Remove signposts in🚲lanes
- Move planters away from🚲lanes
- Add reflectivity to nearby obstacles e.g🚌shelters
