Eurydice ventures into the Underworld to save the souls of her estranged former lover Orpheus and that of his wife after their wedding ends in tragedy.

Nestled between Xena: Warrior Princess and the works of Madeline Miller, Well of Souls is a queer reimagining of the mythological tale of Eurydice and Orpheus, a novella filled with love and tragedy in equal measure.

Before Eurydice could whisk her palm against the waist-high grass, Hecate stopped short, and quickly, a shade formed out of that heat-borne glimmer. Eurydice gripped her sword, certain they would be attacked, but the shade made no such movement.
The shade condensed, its humanoid shape as tall as Hecate but lacking substance. Two embers glowed in the stead of eyes, and across its face grew a wicked, silver-toothed grimace.
“None alive shall enter,” came a strained, half-formed voice.
“Name your price, Charon,” Hecate ordered.
Charon, the Ferryman, standing as a guard between realms: a thought that hadn’t occurred to Eurydice, who carried no coin.
Charon served Eurydice a long, searing gaze that burned deep into her very soul.
“Speak to me your most painful truth,” demanded the shade.

She deserved to see her childhood sweetheart again.
Yes, it was a good idea to go to the wedding: a reunion may offer some closure to the wound left open in her heart. She had avoided contact—all contact, including writing letters—since that day he left the bard college seven years ago. At first the heartache had been too great, and the avoidance was simply self-defense. But the avoidance continued, both out of her own stubbornness and the belief that her metamorphosis would not be accepted even by the man who once sang songs about his love for her—for who she once was.
 That was the problem.
“He doesn’t know me.” Eurydice pointed to her dead name, the only one Orpheus knew to use.
“Yes, he does.” Phoebe grasped Eurydice’s chin to win her gaze. “You have always been you. He just knows Eurydice by another name.”

A quick glance at the crowded alehouse bar caught the eye of the familiar smarmy but harmless barkeep, who then hollered something unintelligible at someone across the space. And as soon as Eurydice saw who, anxiety overtook her fleeting confusion: the person now walking towards her was a royal courier.
Eurydice herself wasn’t royalty—that was a laughable thought. And neither was Phoebe despite her regal—nay, divine—presence. But Eurydice did know a prince. Knew a prince. A prince who had withheld the fact that he was a prince, didn’t think disclosing that fact was relevant to the upkeep of their teenhood romance at the bard college, didn’t think it was important for her to know that their tryst was ill-fated from that first flutter of nerves and that first blushing kiss.

Eurydice’s nerves prickled as they passed several Boeotian soldiers dining near the entrance, known by their wide-brimmed helmets that resembled silly metal sun hats. Uniformed soldiers from any territory made both Eurydice and Phoebe uneasy, but Boeotians were out of place this far north. Eurydice pointed the soldiers out to Phoebe, and the pair eyed the men warily. But then people they knew—friends who also frequented this establishment—after waving to Eurydice in greeting, sat down with the soldiers, dispersing cups of ale. Given their relaxed demeanor and the fact that no one else seemed to mind the soldiers’ presence, Eurydice let the worry go. Just in case, she spat softly over her shoulder three times to keep the Keres away, then murmured Hera’s name, warding off ill luck.
