Glastenbury Lap 2: An excellent lap this weekend with cooler crisp temps. The dogs did amazing, and loved their people-food diet since I FORGOT DOG FOOD?! Thankfully they accepted the tuna, beef jerkey and peanut butter and didn’t cancel me over my mistake.

August is always rough for us—too hot, too buggy, too everything. Even our trails feel “busy” (as in, we see other people). We’re just holding on and limping to the cooler months when our ‘trail friends’—both human and bug—disappear and we get our comfort, peace and quiet back.

What we did this morning, in a brief window of early morning cool. Our fifth annual Welch-Dickey Loop required a 4am departure to be hiking by 6:15 and back in the car by 9. Ready for cold weather!

Whole lotta dog butts lately. We took a quick mountain day trip today up Mount Hale via Zealand, Twinway, Lend-a-Hand, and Hale Brook trails—8.2 miles including the 0.8mi road walk to close the loop. (I/II)

In three days, the dogs and I will drive north for our last scheduled ski trip of the season. I know right where we’ll park, I know Wolfy will be a princess about getting her front booties on, and I know Wylie will be screaming to get going faster. I know we’ll hit the trail early enough to beat the snowmobile traffic, and that the daylight will just be rising in the east, still blocked by the White Mountains. I know which side we’ll ski up as we go up the pass. I know where we’ll turn down the long, zippy tree-lined trail to head back down…on the dogs’ longest ski, ever. . I know because I picked this goal out for them 11 months ago. I know from the intervening months of warm-weather mountain conditioning ascents. I know because we put in the effort for the last year to get Wylie’s early-onset arthritis under control and actively managed. I know because of Wolfy’s physical therapy results. I know because they’ve learned to tell me what they need, and they’ve told me, again and again, in our hours out there, that they’ve got this. . I know that discipline matters more than motivation. I know because despite being an old sled dog and a fake sled dog, they’ve already run nearly 200 miles in-harness this season. We were out in the warm, humid fall for 2 mile scooter runs mid-week, before morning commutes. We answered at 4am wake up calls, and drove 6 hours on day trips, and stole quick runs right from our front stoop on 1” of surprise snow (before the rain stole it back). They’ve done runs with thousands of feet of vert, and runs on ice, and runs through mud, and rocks, and deep powder. . I know we’ll complete the run, our goal for the season. . I know winter is short, and that after Alaska, the next season here will come quick. Good thing I’ve already set our next goal.
