Instant Analysis: Defenders trade OT Ayedze to Gamblers for WR Sanders The first trade since the start of training camp was consummated on Friday when the D.C. Defenders sent OT Gottlieb Ayedze to the Houston Gamblers for WR Braylon Sanders. It's the second time in just over a month D.C. has worked to re-acquire a player from last year's championship-winning squad: They traded for TE Briley Moore from Columbus in February. Here's my instant analysis and grades of the most recent trade. D.C. gets: WR Braylon Sanders Sanders was a bona fide deep threat for D.C. last season, averaging over 25 yards per reception on his 13 regular season catches. Even then, he was fifth among receivers on the team in grabs, so he certainly wasn't a primary target. Sanders worked out for several NFL teams after the season and spent a bit of training camp with the Washington Commanders. The Gamblers took him in the Skill Positions Phase of the most recent Draft. The Defenders lost their two slot receivers from last year in Chris Rowland and Jaydon Mickens but return other contributors and have added Erik Ezukanma and Montrell Washington, in addition to getting Ty Scott back fully healthy. There doesn't seem to be a huge need here unless injuries have struck that we don't know about. In trading Ayedze, a 2024 College Draft pick of the Defenders who spent the last few seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Las Vegas Raiders, D.C. drops some offensive line depth, usually crucial in a spring league. A Maryland product, Ayedze was a regional allocation to the Defenders. While D.C. returns many players from 2025, it's offensive tackles are all new, so Ayedze wasn't stuck behind holdovers from last year. One wonders if the team is potentially overpaying for familiarity. Grade: B Houston gets: OT Gottlieb Ayedze Earlier this week, Houston Head Coach Kevin Sumlin talked to the media about the importance of the relationships formed while he was in the college game, and how that can influence the player acquisition process. Sumlin and Ayedze's time at the University of Maryland crossed over in 2023 when Sumlin was Assistant Head Coach and Co-Offensive Coordinator. Clearly, Sumlin liked what he saw then. Houston appears thin at tackle, and Sumlin mentioned in the same conference call that some linemen, like tackle Kellen Diesch, have been tried with success on the interior. If that's the case, a spot at tackle would open up. If you have the chance to get someone with recent NFL experience like Ayedze, I can see why Houston would do so. The Gamblers' receiver room has players who can stretch the field in Jontre Kirklin and Jalen Moreno-Cropper. Whether by design or necessity, Coordinator Eric Price's offense was not a down-the-field attacking system last year. Of the top five players in receptions for Houston last season, the highest yard-per-catch average belonged to Lawrence Keys III at just 10.5. Sanders's strengths may not fit the offense Houston is running. Grade: B+

Orlando Storm Release Two Defensive Lineman, Add DE Chris Collins The Orlando Storm are preparing to enter their final week of training camp for the 2026 UFL season. At the conclusion of training camp UFL teams, including the Orlando Storm will need to cut their roster down to 50 players. However, the Storm have already started making personnel adjustments before they need to make their official roster cuts. Earlier this week, the Storm made the decision to release defensive ends T.J. Pesefea Jr. and Maximilian Roberts. The removal of those two players from the Orlando training camp roster, created opportunities for other players looking to make a splash like defensive end Chris Collins. The UFL announced that the Orlando Storm signed Chris Collins, and Collins versatility makes him an ideal player to add due to his ability to play outside linebacker and defensive end. Signed to active roster: Orlando DE, Chris Collins Trade: DC receives - WR, Braylon Sanders from Houston Houston receives - T, Gottlieb Ayedze from DC Transferred to retired list: Orlando T, Teton Saltes — UFL Communications Department (@UFL_PR) March 14, 2026 The 6'5", 255-pound defensive end Chris Collins comes to the UFL after spending the 2024 NFL season with the Los Angeles Chargers. Collins has an impressive physical frame, and long arms that give him a significant advantage when it comes to defeating blocks by offensive players. When playing in a 3-4 defense, Collins has the ability to play outside linebacker, and brings impressive intensity when blitzing, and in a 4-3 defense he would best be suited to play as a traditional defensive end position. During his college football career, Collins played five seasons at the University of North Carolina from 2018 until 2022. While playing for the Tarheels, Collins played in 47 games and recorded 34 solo tackles, 35 assists, and 6.5 quarterback sacks. After the 2022 season, Collins transferred to the University of Minnesota where he played in 12 games and registered 9 solo tackles, 9 assists, and 1 interception. Offensive Tackle Teton Saltes Retires Former Saint Louis Battlehawks offensive tackle Teton Saltes has made the decision to retire from professional football. During the last two UFL seasons, Saltes has struggled with injuries, and over the course of the last two seasons Saltes has only played in 2 games. The Orlando Storm had the opportunity to claim Saltes due to the connection between head coach Anthony Becht and Saltes. Rather than finish training camp, Saltes chose to bring his career at the professional level to an end. For more football content, check out Football Scientific Follow me on X: @AaronSauter7

Houston Gamblers and DC Defenders Complete Player Trade The Houston Gamblers announced today that the team has acquired offensive lineman Gottleib Ayedze from the DC Defenders in exchange for wide receiver Braylon Sanders. Gottlieb Ayedze was selected by the DC Defenders with the fourth overall pick in the 2024 of the UFL College Draft. At the time of the draft, Ayedze had already signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft, so he did not immediately join the Defenders. He later spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders before returning to the UFL. In January 2026, Ayedze was officially allocated to the Defenders’ roster, allowing the team to retain his rights from the earlier draft and add him to their offensive line as part of the league’s player allocation process. The Gamblers continue preparations for the 2026 United Football League season. It’s too bad #UFL isn’t sending personnel folks to college pro days again this year. Not so much for info-gathering , but so that those scouts can reach out to schools, players and agents on behalf of the league to promote it as a viable option for many of these players. @uflnewshub.com

PARKS: In spring football "Survivor," XFL side left standing over USFL The only year the USFL and XFL crossed paths, 2023, was like a game of "Survivor." Everyone who followed spring football knew only one league would outwit, outlast and outplay the other. It was only a matter of when that would happen. Both leagues would poke and prod from time to time without necessarily directly mentioning the competitor. And who "won" the 2023 season was likely based on whatever metric you could choose to prove the point you wanted to make. The end of the rivalry came sooner than most expected. It wasn't one league defeating the other or absorbing the other; rather, it was a partnering of equals. At the outset of the UFL's existence, ownership seemed very cognizant about trying not to "favor" one former brand, the USFL or XFL, over the other. After all, they needed to draw from both fanbases - and beyond - in order to thrive into the future. Management was combined as equally as possible, teams were carefully selected with the same in mind, while players and coaches were divvied up to allow many to have a chance to participate in the merged product. Now about to enter its third season, the priority is no longer equality; it's survival. And to that end, it's become crystal clear that the XFL side has outlasted the USFL. Last USFL exec left, turn out the lights The biggest - and perhaps most surprising - move this off-season was the non-renewal of Daryl "Moose" Johnston's contract. Johnston had been a leader behind the scenes in the USFL, moving over to become Executive Vice President of Football Operations in the UFL. He was the public face of the UFL, doing a lot of interviews, hiring head coaches, and generally running the football ops department. Amid the UFL's reshuffling this year, Doug Whaley - from the XFL - inherited much of Johnston's role. Working alongside him is another XFL alum, Russ Giglio, while Jim Popp, Johnston's ally from the USFL, was also shown the door. Remaining in Football Operations is David Dykeman, initially hired by the XFL in December 2021 as Director of Football Special Projects. He has worked his way up to a Vice President of Football Operations. The three regional scouts working underneath Whaley, Giglio and Dykeman - Jim Monos, Rick Mueller, and Will Lewis - all came from the XFL tree, as did Patrick Austin, former XFL Director of Team Operations, now Manager of Football Ops. It doesn't end with that department, however. Those few public relations people that have survived the last couple years are XFL folks. How about the cities? Birmingham and Houston are the lone USFL survivors (though Houston doubled as an XFL franchise), while D.C., St. Louis, and Dallas represent the XFL (the rebrand from Roughnecks to Gamblers appears to be a rare "W" for the USFL side of things). Zooming out, the headquarters of the UFL aren't located in Birmingham, Alabama, where the USFL was stationed; Arlington, Texas was chosen, where the XFL was based. And the UFL's hub model? They went with the XFL's version rather than that of the USFL. Though new co-owner Mike Repole has taken on a lot of responsibility that used to belong to Russ Brandon, the former XFL head honcho remains a vital part of the management group, as Executive Vice President of Football Operations - Johnston's former job. While both Mike Pereira (USFL) and Dean Blandino (XFL) play prominent roles on gameday, it's Blandino who carries the title of Head of Officiating for the league. A not-so-united front After the merger, members of both sides publicly talked about how the joining together was best for the future of spring football. And they were probably right. They tried to paint a harmonious picture of the two sides uniting as one. In reality, there was tension in some areas. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, one of the early disagreements was in the rules package that would be introduced for the UFL. The USFL utilized the traditional kickoff, standard at the time in both the NFL and college football. The XFL, however, had been using a variation of the kickoff invented by Sam Schwartzstein and first used in the 2020 version of the league. The source said that the split was right down party lines, with Johnston and Popp preferring the USFL's, while Whaley et al. argued for the XFL's. In the end, the traditional kickoff won out. Johnston spoke publicly about the desire for players to be trained on what the NFL was using so as to be able to show NFL scouts what they can do and potentially get signed off that tape. Sound reasoning. Until the NFL changed its kickoff to the XFL version, just as the UFL's season was about to begin, making spring football look like it was behind the curve. Even though he had a history in both the XFL (as the Dallas Renegades Director of Player Personnel in 2020) and the USFL, some players and coaches believed that Johnston favored the USFL franchises when the leagues were blended, according to the source. There was famously the incident before the first UFL Championship between Birmingham and San Antonio where the Brahmas were prevented - by the UFL office, headed by Johnston - from signing a player after objections from the Birmingham side. "I think Moose and Jim Popp's traditional football values clashed with the XFL leadership side, who leaned more toward innovation," the source told me. The USFL, after all, was built on franchises from the 1980s and attracted an older viewing audience. The XFL, from the time of Vince McMahon in 2001 up through the reboot in 2020 and then 2023, was about using spring football as a laboratory to move the game forward. Anyone who has listened to Repole knows he's all about thinking outside the box. In a way, then, it makes sense that he'd trend toward the XFL side of things, who have built and rebuilt that league on innovation. "Repole's thought process was that the league (UFL) wasn't doing enough to stand out," said the source. That certainly explains some of the decisions that have been made since he took over. What's in a name? I'm only half-kidding when I say this, but all of this almost makes you wonder if the league should just change its name back to the XFL. Let's face it, the UFL has not caught on as a brand. Pat McAfee, one of the most prominent sports podcasters, jokingly refers to the league as the "USXFL." When A.J. McCarron was named head coach of the Birmingham Stallions, ESPN Cincinnati Bengals reporter Ben Baby posted on X/Twitter that McCarron would coach "the XFL's Birmingham Stallions." Yes, that's the same ESPN that has an ownership stake in the UFL. The XFL is embedded in the sports zeitgeist in a much stronger way than the UFL. While 2001 was a disaster in many ways, it's now seen as a curio; nostalgia and propaganda (ESPN's documentary, for one) have been kind to it. The gold standard for spring football was the XFL in 2020, which seemed on its way to tremendous success before COVID-19 hit and owner Vince McMahon made the decision to shut it down. Some may choose to write off these opinions as the musings of an XFL fan, so of COURSE he's going to take the XFL side. Fair - I have covered every version of the XFL and did not cover the USFL. But when third party entrepreneurs like Repole come onto the scene and reshuffle the deck in favor of those with XFL backgrounds, it becomes more difficult to write off as bias fandom at play. It's also a series of moves that are tough to write off as coincidence, either. Did the XFL side outwit the USFL side? Maybe. Outplay? Probably. Outlast? Definitely. In the game of spring football "Survivor," the tribe has spoken and the XFL is the one left standing.

Dallas Renegades Head Coach Rick Neuheisel Gives Update With Training Camp Winding Down With one week to go before UFL teams must cut down their rosters for the 2026 season, the Dallas Renegades are continuing to work to get their team ready for their Week 1 matchup against the Houston Gamblers at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Renegades head coach Rick Neuheisel has brought renewed excitement to the franchise after Bob Stoops had been the only head coach since 2019. As two-thirds of the roster being brand new and a coaching staff nearly all different, Neuheisel has assembled a group that looks poised to be competitive in the UFL during the 2026 campaign. Neuheisel spent time with the media, discussing a multitude of topics as he drew closer to finalizing the roster. Here are some of the big takeaways from his media availability from Wednesday's practice. Rick Neuheisel on the Dallas Renegades and what to expect in the upcoming week While speaking with reporters, Neuheisel discussed what the team is focused on over the next two weeks before the Gamblers game. He also shared what to expect in the upcoming schedule for practice to prepare for the final roster cutdowns. "Keeping people healthy, making sure all our situational ideas have been practiced and implemented, and then we'll get ready for a game against the Houston Gamblers. The idea is to give everybody a chance to show their best. We've got a weekend where we're going to get to scrimmage, I guess, a little bit against the Birmingham Stallions. I've yet to talk to A.J. McCarron, their head coach, as to how the rules of engagement of that deal, but hopefully we'll get to play some real football. How many snaps each guy will get will be the subject of a lot of debate, the coaches meetings, because it's going to come down to a few players as to who gets to stay and who gets to go. We want to have ample opportunity to show their wearers in these final days before we have to make that decision." How UFL approaches roster building under the new format The UFL is no longer using general managers for individual teams, as the league itself now handles helping coaches find new talent in the open market. Neuheisel shared more about what that process looks like. "I am leaning heavily on Will Lewis, our representative in the League office. What I do is I give a description of what we're looking for. And you're right, the reason we brought anybody else in was because of some injuries, so that we're not depleting the ranks at a position of one deal, and we're making sure we got fresh legs when we get to the dance on March 28. But it's also a chance to get some new guys in here to learn our system, because when we do make the final cut downs and you have to go down to 50 players, we're going to probably have, of course, there's attrition in this game. And so I want basically guys to be on our, quote unquote, practice squad if they don't get picked up by another team so I can go back and get the same guys who were in camp to know the language. You know all the stuff and can help us and get right back on the team. And so That's basically how we're looking at it. For the most part, all the new guys coming in were because of attrition at the position." What can Renegades fans expect from the team? With everything essentially new in Dallas, Renegades fans are wondering what the team will look like in 2026. Neuheisel shared more about what the fan base can expect to see in the offense and defense. "Well, ideally, we're going to be a run-first offense because if you can run the ball and control the ball, you make it very difficult on an opponent. In trying to stop us, hopefully, you'll have to commit extra people to the box, and that will create great air for what I think is a very talented receiving core, and our quarterbacks will have the wherewithal and the knowledge of how to get us to the right play. At least that's the hope. I think we can play a variety of styles. My experience in spring football has always been there's usually a little bit better athleticism on the defensive line than the offensive line. So we've got to neutralize that defensive front, whether it be with pace, whether it be with the ability to have quarterback run, whether it be with the idea that we can screen them and play different kinds of ways to get the ball out of the quarterback's hands and create a space for gifted ball carriers. So ideally, that's the plan on offense to see, have the ability to do all that and then ascertain what's the effective way to take on any one particular opponent. And then on defense, we've got to be aggressive. We got to have the ability to get after a quarterback and put very much pressure on the edges while also being stout enough up front to force the ball to those edges." While there is time to get everything figured out, that time is dwindling in training camp, leaving Neuheisel with tough decisions to make with such a deep roster in Dallas.

Louisville Kings' WR Lucky Jackson Shares Training Camp Impressions and Coming Home To Kentucky Louisville Kings coach Chris Redman and wide receiver Lucky Jackson met with the media on Wednesday afternoon to provide an update on how training camp is progressing. Jackson, a former D.C. Defenders All-XFL star, most recently played for the Minnesota Vikings. During his time with Minnesota, Jackson was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster on January 6, 2024. In addition to appearing in three regular-season games for the Vikings, when Justin Jefferson injured his hamstring during training camp, it was Jackson who took most of his reps in practice. At the time, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said, "I think it shows a lot that he can step in for [Jefferson] in many ways and take the positional reps that Justin would be taking.” Pointing out that this was an indication of the coaching staff’s trust in him, he continued, ”This is a guy that does everything the right way… doing everything in his control to become the best player he can become.” Jackson’s Early Background A Lexington native who played college ball at Western Kentucky, Jackson is excited to return home to play for the Kings. In addition to playing before family and friends from the Lexington area, he’ll undoubtedly attract plenty of local fans who remember him as a Western Kentucky standout. As a sophomore, Jackson caught a 93-yard pass that set a record for the longest touchdown reception that still stands today. As a senior, he led the team with 94 catches for 1,133 yards and four touchdowns. Jackson’s 94 receptions are the second-most in WKU program history. The Kings' Training Camp Experience Stating the team is off to a great start, Jackson talked about the highly competitive atmosphere at camp with players who are focused on making it to the next level. Despite the competition, there’s a real sense of camaraderie in the locker room. “We’re all on the same page. We all have a common goal. We want to win. We want to get to that next level, so it takes us to come together and really get this thing going.” Having played with top NFL quarterbacks in the NFL, Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins, Jackson was also full of praise for Jason Bean's decision-making and processing skills. Clearly impressed by what he's seen in camp, Jackson feels like Bean has what it takes to be a successful UFL quarterback. Jackson has a well-deserved reputation for a tremendous personal work ethic. His former NFL teammate, Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Murphy, Jr., said, “That’s one of my favorite receivers we have on this team. He’s one of the hardest workers. He's one of the receivers – you know, when you line up, you know he's gonna give you some stuff off the line, all those things; very detailed in his routes. So I'd just say he's a very special receiver.” Jackson credits a former coach for how he approaches his daily professional discipline. Explaining that his coach once told him, “How you do one thing is how you do everything.” Jackson takes that credo to heart. Knowing what’s expected of him in football, he makes sure to check all the boxes in every aspect of his daily discipline. Jackson knows how to work on his body and how to rehab it. But he also applies it to other areas of his life to help him be the best man that he can be. What Jackson Learned From His Time in the NFL Asked how his time with the Vikings helped shape him into the professional he is today, Jackson responded that it helped him a great deal in terms of becoming a student of the game. Explaining how he learned to slow the game down, he began reading defenses and viewing plays from the lens of a quarterback as opposed to simply running routes. Describing the other players as students of the game, Jackson said they pick the coaches' brains, show up early for meetings, and are willing to do what it takes to get better. When asked if there was anything that surprised him about the Kings' training camp, Jackson laughed and said, “How much fun I would have.” Admitting that even with his worker mentality, he’s having a blast, just flying around, playing ball, and developing relationships with the other guys. It's obvious from hearing Lucky Jackson talk that he's a player who will be a terrific presence for Louisville, both on and off the field. When asked if there's anything he's doing differently this year than in the past, Jackson responded, "Just diving more into my faith and trusting the process." Given how well Jackson's done thus far in his career, it feels like he has a lot more success ahead of him.
