Cybersecurity research is getting new ethics rules, here's what you need to know - Help Net Security Cybersecurity research ethics is required at top conferences. A guide helps researchers balance innovation, risk, stakeholder responsibility.

Relevant and valuable initiative. I am interested in understanding how the cyber scientific community will react to it and the effectiveness of this stakeholder-based ethics analysis

Apparently, #worldcon and #usenix are on the same weekend this year! I’m the same city! Localized entirely in the same convention center complex!

As Jc Denton would say: “what a deal.”

Slide saying:
STOP DOING RISK
* SINGLE INSTANCES ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO predict!
* YEARS OF HEATMAPS yet NO REAL ARGUMENT ever SETTLED
* Wanted to pretend for a laugh? We had a tool for that: It was called "GUESSING"
* "Yes please give me the odds of Volt Typhoon doing that" -- Statements dreamed up by the DeRanged!
LOOK at what RISK has been providing for all this time

THEYY have Played us for absolute fools!

@adamshostack.bsky.social says STOP DOING RISK 😆

(Math says no to a lot of things people do to try to predict risk. If math says no, I do, too)

This talk is fantastic, I have so much to think about #usenix

BIFOLD’s MLSec group will present 2 papers at #USENIX Security 2025.

One study shows that “virtual” backgrounds in video calls can still leak real-world details — a privacy risk with broad implications.

Our #TapTrap attack got covered in @tuwien.at's news!

This was such a fun project. Congrats to @beerphilipp.bsky.social on his second first-author paper at a top-tier conference ❤️

We'll present the paper at #USENIX in Seattle on August 14 . Looking forward to catching up with some of you there!

This effort is the result of a collab w Sebastian Roth, @lindorfer.in and @beerphilipp.bsky.social who discovered the issue & did the heavy lifting. Thanks to @wwtf.at for making this research possible and supporting us ♥️

See you at #USENIX in Seattle next month!

TapTrap: Animation‑Driven Tapjacking on Android

Our new Android attack, #TapTrap, is getting media coverage — so here's a quick explainer.

It's a new tapjacking technique that exploits Android's UI animations to hijack user taps without requiring any permissions. @beerphilipp.bsky.social will present it at #USENIX Sec'25.

This is a photo of a circular birthday cake with chocolate frosting. The cake has a decorative border of piped chocolate rosettes or swirls around the edge. The main surface is covered in smooth chocolate frosting with text written in teal or green piping that reads “Happy 50th Birthday USENIX!” The text is surrounded by decorative flourishes and dots in the same teal color. The cake appears to be sitting on a white surface, and you can see part of what looks like a person’s dark clothing at the bottom of the image. This appears to be a celebration cake for USENIX’s 50th anniversary.

I know it's just a script and not the sort of thing usually considered "worthy" of academic study but I really feel like there should be a proper paper about #poudriere and the #FreeBSD package build system — the sort of thing that used to be presented at #Usenix ATC once upon a time.
