It had its own black owned electric power company founded by local black resin agents who were tired of being denied basic services. The Moeten Electric Cooperative didnt just power homes. It symbolized independence. Why dont companies refuse to hook up black households or charge them outrageous rates ? So Martin said, Fine, Well build our own. They strung the wires, flipped the switches, and took full control of their grid. In the backlash came quick, County officials tried to deny them permits. State regulators threw roadblocks.
