A horizontal flag pole emerges from the right hand side into the centre of the image, from which is hung the banner of San Marco: a golden lion on a red background, with six wide fringes on the flying-end of the flag. However, this particular specimen has clearly seen the harsh effects of some ferocious wind, and the flag has ripped almost all the way along the lines of the fringes, and then been blown and spun round and round the flagpole, so that what remains is a dense scrunched lump of fabric in the middle where the sun glints off the barely-visible wings of the lion, with long tattered ribbons on either side of it, which are dancing in the current breeze.
