The morning is still young on Tiritiri Matangi. Near the island's lighthouse, one can see the Coromandel Peninsula on the far horizon, enveloped in a cloudbank. This is after a very early event of the sanctuary's Dawn Chorus ("Spring is the very best time to visit the island for the Dawn Chorus – immerse yourself in birdsong surrounded by rare birds and native forest as the sun rises…and with a little luck you may even hear the exclusive kōkako!") The sky is mostly cloudy. Thin darker swathes are topped by lighter ones with just a peek-a-boo of blue sky in the upper left-hand corner. Hauraki Gulf was particularly calm and slate grey, and the "sun-prints" on the still water are as if Tama-nui-te-rā himself was lightly padding over to see what we tāngata were up to. Light droplets of condensation cling to the underside of a white metal fence which kept us interlopers away from a cliff’s edge (and off the lush, thick grass and native shrubs as well as any precious bird colonies and nests). How early is early? Be to the ferry 15 mins before departure – AT 4AM! Ferry lands at the island at 5.20am. From there a walk up from the ferry on a dark trail thru the forest (our torches had to have red cellophane tape over them so as not to disturb any Kiwi birds), where we waited in wooden seating area to listen to the dawn chorus of the birds.
