Suspected — but not yet confirmed — possible cases of measles have been reported by the Jackson County Health Department (JCHD) and the Vinton County Health Department (VCHD). JCHD Health Commissioner Kevin Aston told _The Telegram_ Thursday afternoon, April 17, that JCHD has been made aware of separate single suspected cases of measles reported at two different health care facilities in Jackson County. One involved a Jackson County resident and the other a Vinton County resident. In a news release issued late Thursday morning, VCHD reported that there was a suspected measles case at Central Elementary School in McArthur. VCHD stated it is coordinating with the Vinton County Local School District on the situation. Both JCHD and VCHD are awaiting testing results to determine if any of three suspected cases do turn out to be measles. Aston noted that JCHD monitored two previous suspected cases of measles, but neither case turned out to be the measles. The VCHD news releases stated, “Samples have been sent to a laboratory for analysis; however, due to the upcoming holiday, results will be delayed two to four days.” In an afternoon Facebook post, JCHD released the following statement: “The Jackson County Health Department is aware of and monitoring two SUSPECTED cases of measles that appeared at local healthcare facilities within the last 18 hours. These suspected cases are isolating and taking the appropriate steps and precautions at this time until test results are available. Of the suspected cases only one is a Jackson County resident. Lab samples have been sent for analysis; however, due to the upcoming holiday, results will be delayed for 2 to 4 days.” VCHD offered the following description of measles: “Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. Those who have been vaccinated for measles are protected against the virus. If you are unsure of your vaccination status, reach out to your primary care provider. The measles virus normally grows in the back of the throat and in the cells that line the lungs. The virus can live for up to two hours in the air. “Symptoms usually appear 7-14 days after a person encounters the virus,” the VCHD post continued. “However, it can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear. About 10-12 days after exposure, people who are infected with measles usually experience a fever of 101-105 degrees Fahrenheit. This fever is followed by a cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis (pinkeye), and a blotchy rash. The rash typically appears on the forehead/hairline first. It then spreads to the face and neck and then the rest of the body over the next three days.” The VCHD does not provide testing or treatment for measles and it advises those who think they may have been exposed to measles to reach out to their primary care providers. However, they should call ahead first as there may be precautions that need to be taken to prevent spreading the illness to others. The JCHD post also urged residents to make sure they are vaccinated against the measles and also practice proper hygiene to avoid the spread of the contagious disease. “If you are unvaccinated or do not know your vaccination status, please talk to your healthcare provider or call the Jackson County Health Department at 740-286-5094 to schedule an appointment to receive your MMR Vaccine,” JCHD advised. “Practicing proper hand hygiene and keeping to yourself while you are ill can help to decrease the spread of not only measles but other viruses and germs.” JCHD states that individuals can become fully immunized by receiving two doses of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella). This is the way to protect yourself and others from exposures to measles. “The way to protect yourself and your family from measles and all other vaccine-preventable diseases is to become fully-immunized before the measles virus shows up near you and you’re exposed to it,” JCHD further advises. “This way, you not only bolster your immunity and protect yourself from harmful viruses, but you also protect those that are the most vulnerable to severe infections and are too young to get immunized themselves.” On March 25, Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, announced a measles outbreak in Ashtabula County and one confirmed case of a visitor in Knox County, who exposed others to measles in Knox and nearby counties. Dr. Vanderhoff said ODH and Ashtabula County had identified 10 measles cases as of that day. Nine are linked to an adult male reported the previous last week as the state’s first measles case of 2025. None of the individuals were vaccinated.
