This is both a positive and negative
On the negative, it's much harder to get those highest level troops and losing them is painfu
However it also means an army of higher level troops can take on almost any army

The geography also helps the faction earn quick victories across the map
They're safe from random attacks, and also have 2 fiefs they can (quite) easily take to expand their territory
Meaning they can grow quickly and in silence

The player starts the game under attack, and then the Merchant gives them some money to hunt down some bandits
This taught the player about the recruitment, small battles, and money, mechanics
Now the game gives them the feeling of being a hero
