Gladys West (born 1930) is an American mathematician. She was offered a job as a programmer in the U.S. Navy in 1956 where she stayed until her retirement 42 years later. When she arrived at the programming lab, she was only one of 4 African American employees and only the second African American woman. She quickly gained respect and rose in the ranks. She worked as a programmer for large-scale computers and a project manager for data-processing systems used to model the shape of the earth. All of her work laid the foundation for today's GPS used in phones, cars, etc. She holds two Master's degrees and a Ph.D. She was inducted into the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame, one of the Air Force space command's highest honors.
