Cover of Overstaying. Surreal drawing of dog with a human head on a beach at night with a dark sea in the background. It's called 'Sur la Plage Abandonnée' drawn by Lucie Kohler
From Devon Halliday's Barrelhouse review: "The visitor is sapping the life out of the narrator, or she is sapping the life out of him. The narrator is protecting the visitor, imprisoning him, feeding him, starving him, taking advantage or being taken advantage of, seducing or being seduced. The novel’s fragmented structure allows all things to be true in turn, never contradicting because they never meet. Unlike novels that explore each nuance of a complex relationship dynamic, Overstaying nips individual bites of nuance out of many possible dynamics: the dynamic of unwelcome guest and longsuffering host, of flighty guest and possessive host, of affectionate guest and indifferent host, of parasitic guest and complicit host. It is thanks to this inconstancy that Overstaying manages to evade allegory. Is this a novel about immigration, about ownership, about lost generations and lost places, about the corrupting nature of stasis? Occasionally, yes—but mostly it is a novel about the narrator and her relationship to the world, the visitor expressing aspects of that world like an outgrowth."
2025 No. 33: Overstaying by Ariane Koch. Tr. from German by Damion Searls @dorothyproject.bsky.social
Loved it! The excerpt from Devon Halliday's review covers the style and themes well. The book's also very funny www.barrelhousemag.com/blog/koch-ov...
