Sign outside a restaurant in North Beach, San Francisco, taken from my table, which was the only one on the sidewalk. Being an early bird has its advantages! I had walked all around the area, searching for Calamari on a lunch menu, finally found this one (though it's not listed on the sign).

Had a chance to visit my beloved San Francisco in 2009, staying at a friend's studio on Russian Hill. I walked all over town every day, hitting all my old haunts. Alexander Graham Bell making the first call on the instrument that would eventually be called a telephone. He is sitting at a desk, surrounded by curious men.

On March 10, 1876, Bell used "the instrument" in Boston to call Thomas Watson who was in another room but out of earshot.
