#Writephant A2: The common advice is not to start a story with a dream sequence. Aside from that, do you use dream sequences in your writing?

No, but I have written what one character hoped was just a dream when she remembered it the next day.

She had a...reaction* to a painkiller, which led […]

I don't get what #writephant is about

0 0 0 0

Yes. I’m actually revising a story based on an actual historical figure. The ones that stick in my head are the ones seemingly erased from history because they’re not powerful. As a result, there’s no record of them. #writephant

#Writephant A3: How much effort do you put into describing food in your writing?

It depends.

Christmas at Jenny's house? Lavish descriptions of the English traditional roast (a whole turkey in its natural habitat, swimming in gravy with roast potatoes), the Australian traditional seafood […]

#writephant A3 What’s one thing about your writing process you’ve enjoyed the most this year? (This could be a new routine, software, pen and notebook, anything!)

I really really really like that I can draft on a tablet and edit on a PC. Using OneNote has let me do almost 100% of my outlining […]

#writephant Q2 How do you plan to balance rest and writing time over the holidays?
I don't
There is no balance, and the stories just keep bubbling up in my head and demand to be let out to play

#writephant Q1 How did your writing and publishing goals go in 2025?

Tardy response
Writing went splendidly, publishing less well because I am waiting on cover art to do the publication part. I did, however, succeed in pulling all my books off Amazon KDP, and finding alternatives for ebook […]

Cover of Grace & Favour. Blue and brass-yellow colours predominant. The title is in fancy font at the top, and there's what looks like a photo portrait in an ornate frame, of two men, one in a top hat, one holding a pocket watch, and a large white dog. In the background of the photo (actually a daguerreotype, but anachronistically in colour), there is the faint impression of a woman, transparent...you could say, almost ghostly...

Mood board for Grace & Favour. Has a painting by Turner (a watercolour of Hampton Court Palace from across the river), a daguerreotype in a case, a ghost postcard, a Scots phrasebook, and a big picture of Max, a Maremma livestock guard dog, big, white and fluffy.

3 . Some shows like Sesame Street show monsters as furry creatures that just happen to not be human. Confusingly, Grouches aren't monsters. What do you think of these portrayals?

It's fine until they start Disneyfing folk monsters. Leave my vampires, ghost, and ghouls alone.

4 . Consider this scenario. You have a monster under the bed trying to scare you. Not your kids or other family members; just you. How do you handle the monster? If they want to eat you, does that change your strategy?

Wave my charms at them and start chanting an appropriate mantra […]

A5 . You have to make a monster for your next story, and you choose the genre. Are they friendly? Ferocious? A protagonist, antagonist or side character? And do they have a tail?

In my next series, the plan is for antags to be a cadre of spirits who have been dead 1,000 years led by […]

An open notebook, with the cover on the left (a wolf head with Viking vibes, surrounded by flowers, for witchy vibes). On the right, pretend handwritten text reading “fantasy gay romance with Viking vibes, men who think they’re clever, and monsters”. Plus a little cat with an arrow pointing to it saying “not the monster”

THe main characters for Little Wolf and the Witch verse each other.

Little Wolf is Feilan. Which is Remy.

Feilan: isn’t a barbarian, won’t hunt monsters
Remy: isn’t a witch, just a redhead
F: have FWB, not (very) interested in you, thanks
R: have you noticed how naked I am?
F: what do you mean we’re married now?
R: I don’t make the rules darling
F: I’m still not fighting the monster for you
R: but a poor lonely vulnerable naïf needs you (and so does the queen)
F: fine I’ll fight the human monster for you
R: why are you glaring at my uncle like that?

Puns and feghoots. Most of that stuff has been serious. So something really silly hasn’t happened. #Writephant

I prefer a buildup with a setup to a funny scene. One thing I wish I could write is something equivalent to Diana Wynne Jones’s funniest scenes, like when an assassin begs to be saved from a pit of orange juice because drowning in that is not dignified. #Writephant
