Episode 14: A Few Princesses More
The man known to one and all as Uncle looked upon his little domain and saw that it was good. The red-checked tablecloth was visible only at the edges, as maps, books, and diagrams hid the rest from view. To the stragglers of the Sunday lunch-hour rush at Max's Pizza, it might have been a confusing mess, a clutter of mundanely eldritch reality laid over the prosaic normalcy of the pizza parlor table. Or maybe they were used to it; this would be the fourteenth consecutive weekend he'd set up shop at this table.
Fourteen weekends. More than anything else about the table, that number was insane. He'd been in gaming groups that were lucky to manage quarterly sessions, or bimonthly, or simply when the stars aligned and Venus was retrograde and entering the sign of the Dyspeptic Pixie. Having mostly the same set of kids show up weekend after weekend over the course of the summer was nothing short of a miracle for anyone experienced with running games. He could appreciate it, did appreciate it, would forever appreciate it, even as he acknowledged that this was likely the last weekend in a long series. Summer was over, school was back in session, and he could see his niece Helen plodding through the front door of the pizza parlor with all the world-weariness of a seventh-grade girl with 1d20+3 problems.
Out of habit, he rolled a red twenty-sided die and got a 4. Given the math, it was perfectly appropriate.
