A marbled black and white clay mug sits on a potter's wheel. In the splash tray around the wheel, porcelain black and white trimmings in long stripes sit.
A closer look at the trimming scraps.
I love with agateware, even the trimming scraps are pretty.

A mug with a white and red marbled pattern sits on a shelf.
The same mug now fired, is held in a hand. It is now white and black but with the same pattern and light/dark spots.
Before/After of a stoneware agateware mug. I'm mixed on the glaze, as this clear has some drawbacks, but I love the piece.

My favorite oil bottles yet. The last few I made were loose where the cap sat, so I really hope these turn out well.
They're really efficient for stain use due to the wedging method I've been doing, using ~0.5 lb of dyed clay and ~3 lbs of plain clay.

A few mugs I made this weekend before/after trimming. I love how constrating they are after. I like the blending in a different way though, and I think I may know how to replicate it post trimming if I feel like it in the future.

4 mugs, 2 planters, and 5 miniature vases, all marbled and black/white or orange/white sit upside down on a table.
Currently glazing pottery and trying to pretend the world is not getting worse every day. Wouldn't it be crazy if good things happen?

Marble orange mugs I've been making. Full throwing video at some point (probably). Maybe once I'm back from Winnipeg. Tests are hopefully done soon for new colors, so eventually I'll hopefully have blue, red, purple and yellow marble mugs.

A marbled lump of porcelain is pictured on the left. On the right is a marbled clay oil bottle. A similar pattern is seen circled on both pictured.
How wedging can effect the end result in agateware. Pretty happy with this one. Hopefully the oil bottle cap fits well on this one because honestly I haven't really figured out that part yet.

A marbled clay planter, with stripes carved into it, creating a surface similar to gears.
The carvings seen in closer detail.
Today I tried out some carving on an agateware planter. It was definitely a neat result, but not without incident, as you can see in the last 2 pics. Thankfully nothing unfixable though.

I had some disasters happen with some of my pieces. Nothing explosive, but I think I had clays that shrank too differently, and caused some bloating, bubbles and cracking. At least I was able to look at it in depth after breaking it.

I've made some changes to my wedging process for agateware. This really helps maximize the pattern and effects I can get in a piece with a small amping of stained clay (stain is expensive and takes work to wedge in).

So happy with this oil vase. I have to do some fancy wedging and throwing techniques to get this sort of marbling effect instead of just a spiral, but it's so worth it.

Miniature agateware vase.
These are so cute and it seems people who buy stuff from me love them a whole lot more than I even love making them.

Throwing and trimming process for afore-posted big marble vase. I'm loving how it's coming out but already have ideas for the next one.
Also sorry for bad camera work and not including the top piece attachment (a class was starting).

Quick update on some of my agateware pieces. I especially love mug#2 (white/brown). I need to figure out exactly how I wedges that and replicate it.

Big (maybe 1.5 feet?) agateware vase is now trimmed. Only 4.5 lbs before it's even dry. I think I'm loving porcelain more than I ever liked stoneware. It's gonna look so good when it's fired.

I wish it was more feasible to get these sort of swirls that you see on the bottom of this piece on to the main body. It looks so neat and stark with the black/white contrast.

A marbled mug rests on a table between two plants. The mug is black and white with swirls and patterns similar to marble.
Another side of the mug is shown with other interesting patterns. The white handle can be seen in a side profile.
My first finished agateware mug! It's already been conscripted by my gf, but I have others for future markets.
Unfortunately I also had some busts in the same batch, likely due to a compatibility issue with one porcelain I used.

A ceramic vase is being thrown on a pottery wheel. The bottom 2/3rds is marbled with black and white portions, and there is a section of the vase that is just white on top. It is somewhat curvy, widening from the foot to it's belly, narrowing to it's neck and opening to a rim the same size as the foot.
A big agateware pot is underway. This also literally isn't even it's final form, but a class was starting and I had to stop recording.

Trimming process for a porcelain agateware butter crock. These turned out so wonderfully and the contrast was so sharp.
And yes, I was spraying water on this dry piece frequently during this, hence a bunch of trimmings sticking to me.

Glazing day for a lot of my agateware pieces.

I made a series of agateware vases with a few different techniques, using only black&white porcelain. The first one has been requisitioned for our own use at home, and probably won't be making it to another market.

I've been making oil bottles lately, including some agateware ones. These fire to black and red, and the last picture is after a bisque fired. They're not done just yet, but should be glaze fired soon.

A miniature vases colored similar to marble is held in someone's hand.
Several miniature vases with marble patterns are lines up in front of ceramic planters.
Another agateware miniature vases is held in a hand, but this one is similar to sandstone, with yellow and white stripes, as well as some darker, brown or black stripes.
Miniature vases I've been making out of scraps of agateware pieces. If you trim bits off during throwing, it's hard to re-use agateware. By making tiny things out of those trimmings, you can preserve the pattern/contrast.

A black and white striped porcelain vase is held up. Behind it is a zebra. The pattern on the vase resembles the coloration of the zebra.
A zebra agateware mug, and the model posing behind. Taken at the Denver zoo.
Believe it or not, I didn't plan to take this picture but like 4 things aligned for me to have the vase on hand at the right moment.

While glazing is one of my favorite parts of pottery, the challenge of coloring clay and then turn into something unique is special too. These Agateware pieces (and more) will be on sale Sunday Dec 14 at the Mt Pleasant Holiday Market, my last of the year.

A snowy semi-wooded scene with some very healthy deer hanging out not far away
A stripey buff-and-red striped mug with a black-and-copper glaze on the rim and an ear-shaped handle
A pile of a dozen buff-and-red striped mugs at the bisque stage, not yet glazed. Manta have ear or curl-shaped handles
Grey-and-brown striped freshly-thrown mug bodies, still wet and not yet handled
Garden season definitely over, pottery season begins again. Reskilling by throwing a bunch of agateware for a studio fundraiser. This new handle shape is excellent.
