Yesterday, two Oireachtas committees discussed giving gardai the power to use AI to single us out from a crowd on CCTV based on our face, gait and body size.
ICCL’s @olgacronin.bsky.social sets out the concerns we have, the lack of detail and what “biometric analysis” means under the #AIAct.
Guidance first, obligations second. For the #AIAct to work for #SMEs, compliance deadlines must be linked to harmonised standards and @ec.europa.eu guidance.
The #DigitalOmnibus should fix this and align timelines for SMEs and public authorities.

If Ireland is then bringing in "biometric categorisation" as per the AI Act (but calling it something else) it begs the question: will Ireland fulfil all the legal obligations of the AI Act in respect of "biometric categorisation"?
All will be in the code of practice...

Gardai has CCTV of Person A at location 1; and CCTV of another person at location 2. Gardai compare the two to see if it's the same person.
Not just faces, but also gait or person's size can be compared

Seems like there aren't too many people who have read the #GDPR ... and the #AIAct (in german and english) ... and the official Guidance on the AI Act.
I can confirm: not exactly an entertaining reading.
And I dont't like the AIAct. It's ways too fuzzy.
Scraping artists, creators, and right holders with...
No transparency.
No traceability.
No enforceability.
No Accountability.
= No functioning copyright market.

The AI Act Omnibus is now about one thing for rights holders:
Enforceability.
If transparency weakened with soft-law “codes”, ©️ becomes theoretical.
No audit trail = no enforcement.
No transparency = no licensing market.
Simplification must not dilute rights.
