Female Sloughi nursing her 5 cubs - Middle Kingdom limestone figurine 2033 - 1710 BC - Egypt - Louvre Museum in Paris. The Sloughi is a very ancient greyhound. Genetic research has found that this breed is at least 8,000 years old and is indigenous to Northern Africa (no relation to Salukis or other 'Oriental' greyhounds). Zooarchaeologists have found a sloughi skeleton dated over 5,500 years ago in predynastic Egypt; the first representations of this African greyhound date back to the same period (an ivory statuette and a hunting scene painted on tomb 100 of Nekhen). #english Mosaic of a Dog - Floor medallion at the Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria in Egypt - 1st cent. A.D. The Romans were masters in the art of mosaic in which they represented characters, legends, historical events and animals that lived in their territories. Among these were also their dogs. The dog in the picture must have belonged to an Egyptian noble who lived at a time when Rome also dominated those territories. It looks like many dogs today, perhaps more like a Terrier than other breeds, but that doesn't matter. What matters is this dog is among the many ancient dogs featured in my books ORIGINS IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT DOG BREEDS and ROMA CANES MUNDI, online in paperback and electronic format (pdf, epub, mobi) in English and Italian (ORIGINS is also in spanish, french and russian).
