Back to #ancmakers #AIASCS for @ScottLepisto's presentation, "Make Your Own Ancient Studies Podcast": demo will include how to use Audacity to edit audio [fun fact: I used Audacity to edit my music for ballroom competitions before I dropped a dime on more intense software]

Next up at #ancmakers, @bretmulligan (Haverford) with the CommentarySandbox plugin for WordPress. Background on how the plugin came into being, examples of using it. #AIASCS

Hopped over a few rooms to #AncMakers. Introduction by @diyclassics. David Packard many years ago at the then-APA brought an Ibycus Micro to do hands-on work with the machine -- we're working in a tradition here! Doing good research and scholarship aided by digital tools #AIASCS

Sorry for dropping off Twitter and #AIASCS. Needed some alone time tonight. Looking forward to an extremely full day tomo, though! The plan: in & out of #ancMakers bc of concurrent panels, but looking fwd to CommentarySandbox w/ @bretmulligan and podcasting w/ @ScottLepisto ...

Taking comments from this year's #AncMakers final panel to heart and using/citing this powerful blog post in my diss intro: Rajendran, Shyama. 2018. “Becoming Procne and the Power of Rage.” The Tattooed Professor, accessed February 5, 2018....

Thread. As @rympasco and I were waiting in line at Starbucks today, we were talking about the #AncMakers final panel yesterday and how it made us think about collaboration. Previously, to ask for help made it feel like it delegitimized your claim to be creating original ... 1/5

In the meantime, shout out to @diyclassics for an excellent #AncMakers today -- great presentations, smoothly run, massively inspiring for an aspiring "Classicist with a set of digital tools," rather than "digital Classicist," like me! #aiascs

6th: how do we as digital humanities get companies, computational power involved and interested in our 'humanities' work? Z: I don't know how to do that in Classics ... DH: But there've been Classicists who've gotten natl grants. If you have the science ... #AncMakers #AIASCS

B: or we wait for them to die. I don't mean kill them, just they'll die and we'll replace them. 😂😂😂😂😂 #AncMakers #AIASCS

5th: but then how do you convince a skeptic who refuse to accept blogs as scholarship? B: the same way all academics do -- through peer pressure. it's hard to give facts to people who've made up their minds, but what's mainstream is difficult to fight against #AncMakers #AIASCS

DH: If I write a long, scholarly blog post, I put it on my CV or in my bibliography. Quotes, URL, not cited any differently than a book or an article that I wrote #AncMakers #AIASCS

B: Same pejorative attached to 'comics' so people sanitize with 'graphic novels' but dummy, meaningless term. if changing 'blog' changes the conception, then sure, but I care about content. if the terminology determines what *you* think is legit, that's a prob #AncMakers #AIASCS

4th: is the term 'blog' demeaning because of its connotations? Z: i don't usually call @eidolon_journal a blog for that reason; people will take it less seriously. I call the content articles rather than blog, but it's a branding choices. #AncMakers #AIASCS

S: Let's not label; it's all humanities because we're all human #AncMakers #AIASCS

DH: We didn't call ourselves "Microsoft Word Classicists" either (editorial comment: hey, maybe you don't...) #AncMakers #AIASCS

B: i think one day we'll just say humanist rather than digital humanist. we say 'phone' now rather than 'mobile phone' because landlines have gone out of vogue #AncMakers #AIASCS

Zenodo

3rd: Zenodo https://zenodo.org can do that DOI assignment to make digital work citeable. question is: what about the term 'digital' itself? we don't say digital physicist or digital chemist, so why digital classics? #AncMakers #AIASCS

... all the credit going to a project figurehead, often an old white male with thousands of lines on his CV. this is the exciting first publication or credit to their name; don't cheat them of that #AncMakers #AIASCS

2nd: It's a good idea to get your students involved in digital work, like a departmental blog. B: if you're using grad or undergrad labor or giving them micropublication creds, you need to cite and list every one of them. credit where credit's due instead of... #AncMakers #AIASCS

B: we have to help the citation culture but thinking not only about innovation but *preservation* so people can use and continue your work -- stable URI's, methods of citation. if these tools are ephemeral and disappear, so does trust in these tools #AncMakers #AIASCS

Q&A time. 1st: Do you see a shift as time progresses about attitudes towards digital tools? e.g., an undergrad thanked Perseus for a recent project in acknowledgements. B: I think people are lying less now; we all use Perseus, Wikipedia, no shame in saying it #AncMakers #AIASCS

S: That's been happening on the science side forever; see e.g. my Minerva Project Planner for a format for collaboration (can't find URL, sorry) #AncMakers #AIASCS

CB: We're talking about the model of the sole scholar; should we start thinking more about collaborative work? #AncMakers #AIASCS

DH: Not just be okay, but I have to say my collaboration with Mary, Neel, and Chris has been the joy of my academic career #AncMakers #AIASCS

B: You cannot be everything. So I e.g. hate textual analysis but love GIS, so I can go to my uni's digital lab and seek out experts. Be okay with pairing up and acknowledging that collaboration is the norm for DH! #AncMakers #AIASCS

DH: People interested but don't know where to start should identify their resources within their own environments; we at other unis / colleges might not have the right skill sets or resources to help #AncMakers #AIASCS

B: Shout out to @WCC_outreach for setting up their mentorship program as a support system. Lbr, people don't read our scholarship; we pass on information and set an example through our own teaching and mentorship #AncMakers #AIASCS

Z: The DH community has been extremely open and giving and willing to amplify voices. Wanting to be mentors is one thing; potential mentees have to be the ones to seek them out though. We'd be happy to respond to anyone on e.g. Twitter about it #AncMakers #AIASCS

S: I was so lucky to have professors and mentors at Harvard who were always on the cutting edge of things. e.g. Finley always connected Pindar with happenings at Eliot House, Nautopolis collected modern oral poetry, but then they weren't powerful in hierarchy #AncMakers #AIASCS
