The lower half of the picture is gray rock. The rock consists of fractured layers on the right side of the picture the layers angle upward in the middle of the picture. There’s a relatively flat outcropping and near left the rock layers almost seem to be sticking upward. The upper part of the picture is very blue with white clouds. Finley obscuring the sun and throwing deep dark shadow the rhododendron bushes in the last corner of the picture have leaves that are surprisingly rolled thin, even though the temperatures in the 60s. The bushes on the left are very windswept beyond the gray rock. You can see in the distance, the very gentle rise to the top of grandfather Mountain midway on the mountain the curve of the Linn Cove viaduct can be seen between dark green trees. Beyond grandfather Mountain can be seen to the left the unique peaks of the Jonas Ridge / Linville Gorge area, such as Hawks Bill and Table Rock. The center left of the picture shows in the distance, grandmother Mountain with its cell phone tower, and to the right of Grandmother, more mountains, extending in very light colored, rows of blue into the distance.
