Distant blue rows of mountains and blue sky cover the upper 1/3 of the picture. The lower 1/3 of the picture includes rough worn rocks, which are splitting into layers. In the near distance are trees in autumn with greens, reds, oranges, and yellows. The sun highlights a broad area in the near distance, making these colors more prominent. In the distance can be seen a steep mountain dropping off into the Linville Gorge. Rough gray rock at the drop off can be seen through the trees. The Linville River can be seen curving at the bottom of the picture in the Gorge.

Picture has a central rock outcropping covered in stripes of black flaky fungus. The rock angles upwards about 45 degrees and has longer and shorter sections of rock, causing it to resemble a face. The right lower section of the picture has broken rock with lichens. Bottom left has the tops of deciduous trees with large red berries. Thin deciduous branches reach upwards towards the rock with sparse leaves. Above and to the left of the face deciduous trees curve upwards. Two small spruce pines point upwards far upper left. The picture central into the right shows a green forested valley with orange highlights as the trees begin to turn colors. The rolling hills merge into more distant blue layers of mountains in the distance. The sky is white with very tall, thick, gray clouds gathering above the scene.

The lower half of the picture is gray rock. The rock consists of fractured layers on the right side of the picture the layers angle upward in the middle of the picture. There’s a relatively flat outcropping and near left the rock layers almost seem to be sticking upward. The upper part of the picture is very blue with white clouds. Finley obscuring the sun and throwing deep dark shadow the rhododendron bushes in the last corner of the picture have leaves that are surprisingly rolled thin, even though the temperatures in the 60s. The bushes on the left are very windswept beyond the gray rock. You can see in the distance, the very gentle rise to the top of grandfather Mountain midway on the mountain the curve of the Linn Cove viaduct can be seen between dark green trees. Beyond grandfather Mountain can be seen to the left the unique peaks of the Jonas Ridge / Linville Gorge area, such as Hawks Bill and Table Rock. The center left of the picture shows in the distance, grandmother Mountain with its cell phone tower, and to the right of Grandmother, more mountains, extending in very light colored, rows of blue into the distance.

Gray rock extends horizontally across the bottom of the photo with a sudden drop off out of view. The tops of deciduous trees are seen higher on the left and lower on the right in the next row. Distant mountains are seen covered in dark to medium green trees.Beyond in the picture are rolling rows of more distant mountains in a blue green color. These mountains blend with the sky, close to the horizon, becoming more blue. Clouds are mixed with startlingly white clouds on the left, which are being hit by sun and deep gray clouds in shadow as they extend towards the right.

The picture shows a path through Evergreen trees. The path is gray stone and it is angled at about 40° with the higher side on the left and the lower side of the path on the right. The path is about 2 feet wide. Near to the photographer, the photo is all stone. Converging in the distance the path stretches with several areas of bright sun through the trees. Tall evergreens provide deep shade on either side of the picture. in the distance, the sun shines through, and the distant trees are a lighter and brighter green due to the light.

A deep dark blue sky takes up half of the picture, with a few scattered thin white clouds. Blue Ridge Mountains roll gently at the horizon. A clump of evergreen trees is to the lower left. The center of the picture has a taller evergreen and with a small space There is another clump of closer evergreens finishing the picture to the right. There are wild flowers are closest to the photographer.
The left side and bottom of the photo image contain rocks at a slight diagonal upwards. Beyond these a row of jagged, Evergreen trees point to the sky. Between two sets of evergreen trees points, a rock emerging from the greenery by itself at the same angle as the rest of the rocks in the picture. And evergreen tree tops the picture and finishes out the left side. Wild blueberry bushes and other small vegetation are mixed on the left side of the picture in the distance. A gentle curve of grandfather Mountain rises center of picture to the right. Gray rock emerges in some spots with steep stone faces that defy vegetation. The top of the mountain is darker with Evergreen trees, while the lower slopes are covered with deciduous trees. An “s” shaped curve of the Linn Cove Viaduct of the Blue Ridge Parkway way can be seen snaking across the mountain. The sky is a deep midday blue with starkly white clouds, small and close to the mountain.

The top rock on the left is the iconic Rough Ridge picture rock viewed from from the Tanawha trail right before the trails meet. Linn Cove Viaduct seen in the distance.
The bottom of the picture shows moderate and large sized pieces of rock angled upward. Years of dirt have settled between the rocks. About the middle of the picture the rocks become very angular and sheets of layered rock positioned nearly horizontally. The sheets of layered rock are stacked on top of one another in places with 90° corners near the top. Some of the corners are broken, but the sheets of rock are stacked to form a very tall column. The effect at the top of the rock is as if there are thick pieces of paper jumbled in a stack, not neat and straightened . The rock extends outward forming a shaded area. Beside the rock column on either side are moderate sized trees with deciduous green leaves. The top of the rock formation is visually blocked by some of the deciduous leaves. Light filters through the picture from a source of the sun shining from the left side.

Note to self: An easier way to visit this rock formation in the future would be to hike Rough Ridge and then turn right onto the Tanawha trail, and walk 10 minutes. Not hike from the Linn Cove parking lot.

A distant flat horizon line separates the sky, mainly white and gray linear mottled clouds converging to a distant point from the rest of the picture. A grey and light grey rock is in the left corner of the picture. Spring green deciduous trees fill the foreground along with a rhododendron in the right corner. A skinny lone pine tree, trunk slightly bent since forth few branches with most vegetation at the top. The darker green and brown of the pine contrasts nicely with the light green deciduous trees and the white clouds that it crosses into.
