Great Western Malting In 1935 the Blitz-Weinhard beer brewers picked Vancouver as the site of their new malting facility. The site was strategically located on the shore of the mighty Columbia River, a few hundred miles downstream from acres and acres of barley fields in eastern Washington, Oregon, and the Willamette Valley, and the site was next to the main Burlington Northern rail line. In the foreground, and completely unrelated, is the Pacific Coast Shredding scrap metal operation
