And not to forget, breaking your phone with an update so you'll buy a new one. Apple wanted to clear the iPhone6 install base that wouldn't upgrade. No other phone IMO warranted an upgrade until the 12 and Apple started taking away features with the Xr.

Another thing is the fundamentally abusive relationship they just acknowledge with their savvier/poorer base.
With iphone 6, they caused #batterygate because too many people got a 6. They made stopgap updates and let people enjoy their 6S for 4 more years.
