Maine Beer Company in Freeport, Maine When you enter the tasting room at Maine Beer Company, look up! There’s a 50 foot long fin whale skeleton suspended from the rafters above the bar area. This whale skeleton, named Finny, was collected in the fall of 2024 by students and staff at College of the Atlantic Allied Whale and was preserved and articulated by Dan DenDanto of Whales and Nails. The installation was made possible because of Maine Beer Company's longstanding nonprofit giving program. In 2009 their first-ever 1% for the Planet nonprofit donation was sent to Allied Whale and so began a long giving partnership. In fact, Lunch, their popular IPA, is actually named after a whale that was first spotted in 1982 off the coast of Maine (and was catalogued by their photo ID project). Finny isn't Lunch, but her skeleton does represent a unique way for visitors to learn about marine mammals while enjoying a beer.

Anchorage judge overturns state law limiting live music at breweries and distilleries An Alaska Superior Court judge has ruled that a state law limiting live shows at breweries, distilleries and wineries in Alaska is an unconstitutional violation of the First Amendment and the Alaska Constitution’s protections for free speech. We Asked 10 Brewers: Which Beer Do You Wish People Ordered More? (2026) The beer scene finds itself in a weird space. Its economic struggles aren’t exactly a secret, and the road ahead appears murky and ripe for speculation. Yet some absolutes still persist despite the chaos: A properly brewed beer is delicious, accessible, and an excellent option to bring to a laid-back social gathering. There’s also an abundance of beer styles to consider, and that will never change regardless of where the industry’s winds blow. Some beer categories are obviously more popular than others. We Asked 11 Brewers: What’s the Next Big Beer Style? (2025) There are three overarching styles in beer: ales, lagers, and ale/lager hybrids. While this classification is technically correct, it doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Hundreds of subcategories exist under these umbrellas, and some have become popular enough to feel like an independent class. These styles have carved out permanent spots in the beer drinker’s lexicon — everyone who drinks beer on the regular generally knows what to expect when they order an IPA or a stout. There is also an abundance of lesser-known or neglected styles that don’t garner attention quite as readily. But this can change rapidly. In the EU, Breweries Face Stricter Regulations, Cultural Shifts Things haven’t been easy for beer culture in North America, with the Brewers Association recently reporting another year of declines in both sales volumes and the number of U.S. craft breweries. Similar stories have come out of the Great White North, where Jason Foster’s On Beer calculated a 2.9 percent reduction in the number of breweries in Canada, that country’s second successive annual decline. Meanwhile, Mexican producers that have already suffered through years of drought are being hit by new U.S. tariffs. Why Anheuser-Busch Is Carving Up Its Brewing Empire An old industry joke holds that when you order a beer, the liquid itself is free. You just have to pay for the excise tax, the packaging, and the shipping. The latter is the most immoveable of the three. Taxes can be lobbied down, to some extent at least. Packaging can be tweaked, upgraded, and downsized. But until somebody invents a “Star Trek”-style transporter system to teleport beer from the brewery to your fridge, the logistical drag of getting a heavy product to a thirsty customer at scale will remain beholden to the vagaries of the labor and fuel markets. 8 Drinks Trends to Look Out For in 2026 In 2025, the pendulum of drink trends didn’t swing back and forth — it ran amok. Tariffs drove prices up, and general market chaos ensued. The wine industry took a big step back from major entry-level brands in its ongoing struggle to connect with consumers. Martinis (and their garnishes) somehow got even weirder. And coffee shops piled clouds of cold foam — some of it even protein-infused — onto just about every beverage. While much of the conversation around alcohol skewed negative this year, many companies are using this market reset as a time to consider the future. We Asked 10 Brewers: What’s the Most Underrated Hazy IPA? (2025) Though we may be past the peak of the hazy craze, IPAs still reign supreme in the craft beer circuit. If you want proof, all you need to do is pop into your local taproom and peruse the menu. When you do, you’ll likely spot one or two hazy IPAs, if not more. Named after their cloudy appearance, hazy IPAs almost always spawn from a “dry hopping” technique, where brewers add hops at the end of a beer’s primary fermentation. The method diffuses the IPA’s intense bitterness while amping up juicy, fruity essences. The article We Asked 10 Brewers: What’s the Most Underrated Hazy IPA? (2025) appeared first on VinePair.

The 30 Best Breweries in the Country Right Now, According to Beer Pros (2025) Everyone knows the main characteristic of a good brewery is good beer. For this list of the 30 best breweries in the country, we asked for takes, hot or otherwise — as well as justifications — from the people who sell, serve, write about, and brew beer. Number of U.S. Breweries Set to Contract for 2nd Straight Year The number of independent brewery closings is slated to surpass the number of openings this year, according to tracking from the Brewers Association (BA). The BA — a not-for-profit organization of trade members — recorded 268 new openings and 434 closings this year. Unless 166 new breweries come into the market in the final few weeks of the year, 2025 will be the second year in a row that brewery closings outpace openings. The trend carries over from last year when there were 225 openings and 399 closings. But the industry is slimming at an accelerating rate. Terrific old brewery crest on a ceramic tile at the Red Lion in Knighton, Wales (about 250m from the border, at the River Teme). These were installed until the late 1960s. More recent brewery signs rather lack this vigour and craft. #TilesOnTuesday #TowerTuesday #Breweries
