There are extra vigils this Friday at the flyovers near #Swinford and #Charlestown, should be a good impact for N5 traffic - seeing two on the go at the same time. These are one off events, please share and support 6-7 pm.

'We are persistent, we won't go away'

Debbie McCole

Every Friday, we stand on the bridge.

A flag, sometimes a sign. No chants, no loud speakers. Just presence. Cold hands, tired feet, quiet resolve.

It started with a handful of us barely enough to call a group.

Drivers passed in silence at first. Some glared. A few sneered. One or two rolled their windows down to shout. A can was thrown once. A man drove angrily across the bridge another week. arm raised in a Nazi salute to mock us. But we kept standing. Week after week. Same time. Same place.

Eventually, the cars started to beep.

At first, the beeps were cautious, like people checking no one else was watching. Then they be came confident. Rhythmic.

Now, some days, it sounds like a convoy. I often joke: we've trained the cars. Like a kind of muscle memory Balli na's conscience, making itself heard through traffic.

Last Friday, there were 45 of us on the bridge: Old, young, shy, and bold. Some come from down the road, others from across the county.

A woman brings her toddler. A man rushes down after work. One lad doesn't say much, but always helps fold the flags.

None of us are important by the usual measures. Not wealthy. Not well-connected. Not powerful. But we are steady. And we are right. And yes, it comes at a cost.

I know what it means to be left out. To feel doors close that once were open. I've seen conversations shift when I arrive. An acquaintance stopped speaking to me altogether. Someone I've known all my life said,

"It's too political," and hasn't spoken since.

I've been called things I won't repeat. On air. In the street. In car parks. A man on the beach once called me an Islamist for flying a Palestine kite. Another shouted "Irish only while standing on Irish soil as a migrant herself.

I've been labelled a terrorist sympathiser or, even more damningly in Mayo, a troublemaker.

But still, we stand. Still, the horns come. Still, people join.

There are now seven weekly vigils across Mayo. …

The first #bridgil had over 800 bridges of people all around Ireland supporting the people in 🇵🇸 and many have continued since it started.
A mass mobilisation of the Irish people in every corner of 🇮🇪.
Yet,not reported about on RTE news. This is deliberate omission & silence by RTE on this campaign.

Unlawful arrests, police brutality and sexual violence weaponised against peaceful protesters hasn't deterred anyone.

#Bridgil continues in #Ballina this and every Friday at 5pm. Everyone is welcome, people of all politics and none. Bring a flag if you have it. Just bring yourself if not. It's become something really special.
