In most universes, the Illuminati is little more than a secular democratic movement that rebelled against both European churches and governments to open the floodgates for Western democracy and secularism. They were most active during the French Revolution, and are now defunct in most timelines.
However, there is at least one version of Earth (if not more) where the Illuminati not only continued past the Enlightenment period, but also embedded itself into the United States military complex. Now run by profiteering warmongers, the society has been converted by the Warlock (via his alter ego, "The Count") into his own private army.
"The Count" influences the Illuminati to bio-engineer a mutant strain of the Black Death—the "Bubonic Variant"—which can infects and kill in just a matter of seconds. The "plan" is for the Illuminati to use this weapon to extort world governments and eliminate certain targeted populations. Members of the Illuminati believe they are being inoculated so they can survive this evil scheme; but in reality, they are the first to be infected, being used by "the Count" to infects the rest of the entire global population. Again, the social chaos that will inevitably result from this pandemic will be used by the Warlock to destroy Ma'at and grant the Ungod entry into the physical world.

When the Shieldmaiden reaches the universe of "Bacillus Pestis," she breaks into the Illuminati's headquarters and finds everyone either dead or still in the process of bleeding profusely from the pores in their skin. The Bubonic Variant is successfully contained by the government, and the Shieldmaiden pursues "the Count" into yet another reality.
Trivia: This image of the Shieldmaiden of Set is modeled after alternative portraits of Set in Egyptian art, wherein He is depicted with a hawk's head and resembles His divine twin brother, Horus.
