Gregorio Menendez Bustelo, a Spaniard, founded Café Bustelo in the Bronx in 1928. He moved to the United States in 1917 after spending many years in Latin America. In 1931, he opened his own store on 5th Ave between 114th & 113th Streets. He called it the Bustelo Coffee Roasting Company.
